carpet cleaning
« on: Jun 10, 2009, 02:51:28 PM »
So the 4runner I just bought STINKS!!!!!! I pulled the all seats out, center consol and shifter boots and shampoo'd the carpet and it still smells. I let it air out for a week and still nothing. Aside from just ripping out the carpet and buying a new carpet kit, is there any thing I can do?

either the carpet or the sound deadening material underneath it is probably moldy, could pull them out and let them air dry/clean them up outside the cab the best you can.

well I pulled the carpet out and pressure washed it, I pured some carpet clean on it and let it soak. Then pressure washed it again. I am scaping the sound deadening matereial off. Its NASTY! Then I will scub the floor and put the carpet back in, wait a few days and see if it worked.

This thread is not what i thought it would be about.

I would pull the carpet up and see if anything is under it.  or the carpet could just need to be thrown away.     :twocents:

You could always start smoking in it. At least it would be your stink. Make sure you leave the windows down on hot days, esp if the inside is wet. found these online:

Some odors seem impossible to get rid of, but there are a few tricks that are extremely effective. After the mess has been cleaned and dried, set an open bag of charcoal in the car. It is considered to be one of the best natural products to get rid of odors. Another household item that works great against stained odor is white vinegar. Set a bowl of white vinegar in your car and let it sit undisturbed. Let me know if this helps...

I had a problem with a smell in the carpet, bought 12 boxes of baking soda and dumped all over carpet (makes a mess if the carpet is damp) stirred all around and let it sit for 2 days, and repeated. All the smells are gone now....good luck!

My 4Runner smelled like a dirty wet dog when I first got it. I replaced the carpet & seats, now the smell is gone. Get a bunch of those hanging air freshener trees. Good luck.

Baking soda is cheap enough, you could lay a solid layer on the padding side of the carpet and leave it for a few days, then flip the carpet and do the same to the other side.

When I shot that skunk in front of my house last year it leaked and stunk something fierce, and the 2 things that got rid of the smell were time and baking soda.
