Cooling Problem.....
« on: Jun 08, 2009, 11:10:16 PM »
Had a little problem today.

Happened while I was working on the engine too..

I was revving engine from passenger side fender and hear a boom.....

First thought was I blew up the engine    :shake_head:  ,   until I heard a hiss.

Released the throttle and ran around the back   :willynilly: , then forward again to turn engine off.

Coolant all over the place, but none hit me.     :D

Need to get truck running tomorrow as I'm currently in Bakersfield and have to get home tomorrow (near LAX)

What's the likelyhood of the hose blowing again if I just reattach the shortened hose?

I want to replace with a good (Gates or Goodyear) hose which may  not be available locally........

thanks.

I would just through a cheapy on it so you don't have to worry about making it back home.

My opinion is anything is better than having a broken rig. If you have to throw a no name on it to get you going then I say do it.

Looks like Goodyear owns Kelly Springfield.

I would just through a cheapy on it so you don't have to worry about making it back home.

X2 it will last long enough to get you home, get a new hose  and then some.

Other end of hose looked just as bad........

Since I'm leaving from Bakersfield to LA in 2 hours, didn't want hose to blow in middle of night.

So got Kelly Springfield hose and topped with water.

Will replace all hoses at home, and add new coolant.

Are you sure the hose is the only problem? You may want to pull the thermostat so it will run a little cooler. Check your fan clutch also.

Flushed system a couple of months ago, and replaced thermostat.

Thought the hoses were ok at the time.......................

No fan clutch, electric fan.........

Sitting still in garage (in Bakersfield), AC on, reving engine,   just didn't have enough air flow.

Seems fine now.

Did you replace the hose? That's a long way to go with a wounded rig. Take some duct tape. and some extra water.

Did it overheat or just blow a hose? If it overheated do you know what caused it?

You have a long way to go and a lot of nothing in between. May the turtle force be with you. Go easy on the old toy and she will get you there. Let us know how it goes.

You will know if you have a problem before you get to the bottom of the hill. There is plenty of places to stop on the way and even a water stop half way up the hill. Just take your time and you should be fine.

Heater Hoses are so much easier to disconnect when you have no intention of re-using them.......................

The bottom hose doesn't come off in tact on my 1st gen, the big ass 3 row radiator puts it too close to be able to pull either way to remove.  Any time the radiator or alternator has to come out I have to buy a new lower hose.
