Friends and Family,

It saddens me that I have to come to you with this, but this is what we've gotten to in our negotiations with the city council.  On Monday, the city council approved our acting City Manager to lay off up to 32 firefighters.  This is a reduction of over 10% of our line personnel in the fire Department.  This will greatly impact public safety in the Reno/ Truckee Meadows area, as well as our ability to provide mutual aide in times of need elsewhere (Chico, Napa, Santa Barbara, LA,  just a few of the places we've gone in the past few years).  We understand that under economic turmoil, sacrifices must be made.  The city has come to us again and again, asking for concessions, and we have offered everything they've wanted, and more, in return for a garantee to not lay off our personnel, unless there is no other option.  They've rejected each and every one of our offers.

Please take the time, and send an email to the addresses listed below.  It would be greatly appreciated.  Feel free to forward this to anyone you feel may be interested as well, as this affects us all.  From the people of Reno/Truckee Meadows, to the people who come to Reno to gamble, for Hot August Nights, the Air Races, the Balloon Races, Street Vibrations, and all of the other events, as well as the communities receiving mutual aid in the face of fires in their own area.

Thank you,
Jason

Dear Council Person:

I am unhappy about the proposed lay offs of Reno Fire Fighters and Police Officers. I strongly disagree with this action.

Lay offs of Fire fighters or Police Officers in the City will negatively influence my vote in any future election in which you are running.

I strongly disagree with balancing the City's budget on the back of the City employees. There are certainly other revenues that can solve this problem.

I don't agree with closing fire stations or reducing personnel in stations and sacrificing public safety. This action will also negatively influence my vote in any future election in which you are running.

got this email back just now

QuoteThank you for voicing your concerns regarding the city of Reno's proposed budget cuts.  I, too, agree that we must do everything we can to preserve public safety.  During these difficult economic times and because the state has taken millions of dollars from our coffers, we must continue to work together to make sure we do everything we can to preserve all jobs within the city.  I am hopeful that we can continue to work with our employees and come up with a resolution to try to avoid any future layoffs.

Sincerely,
Jessica Sferrazza

Friends and Family,
Once again, I'm asking you to send emails, calls, and faxes to the city council of Reno.  I'll keep this brief, and let the message speak for itself.  As of Monday, layoff notices were mailed out to 32 members of IAFF local 731.  30 Firefighters and 2 Fire Prevention guys.  If the city and the union do not come to an agreement, This will come to fruition as of July 1.

Thank you,
Jason

We had such great success with the first mass E-mailing that we are going for round two. This, along with a massive showing of Local 731 members and supporters at the City Council Meeting will help to deliver our point concerning the layoffs and staffing reductions suggested to the City Council by your Fire Chief Paul Wagner.
Please follow the directions listed below to e-mail, phone and Fax your displeasure in the City Council's attempt to lower the level of fire protection, police protection and emergency care to us and our fellow citizens. Dear Council Person,
I am having a difficult time understanding the savings associated with the laying off of 32 firefighters while still maintaining adequate fire protection.

Currently, you have authorized the reduction of fire department daily staffing that allows up to four pieces of fire equipment to be shut down. If you proceed with layoffs how will staffing be further affected?

Have you and the city council authorized the reduction of fire department daily staffing to fall even further?

Do you still consider the closing of fire equipment to be living up to the City Council's priority of maintaining a "high level of police and fire protection throughout Reno"?

How can you make prudent decisions based on information provided by a Fire Chief that doesn't even know where the Stations he's proposing you close are located. Is this making a truly informed decision?

I understand the depth of the national, if not global, economic crisis but I refuse to believe that this massive reduction in public safety while money is still available is a wise and prudent decision.
