I hear a lot about front axles and birfs breaking but how often do rears break with 35-39" tires?  Ive never heard much about them.
Thanks,
Anthony

I saw an 85 rear axle break with 35s and a detroit. He was going up a real steep ledge but very little throttle. It was interesting.

Dingman.

I broke one driving on the street, in 2wd on 33's.

The catch was.  heat was used on the wheel bearing to remove the old one

moral of story, don't use heat on the bearings when trying to get them out.

Just because mine are so old, i carry an extra in my stationary box.

They usually dont break but every once in a while they do it always seems to be wierd situations though. My friend broke his welded with 33s in a gravel pit driving. I bought my truck with a broken shaft and it was open in the rear with 35s.

I have broken a few... actually more than birfs... I always had a spare, and the heat thing, I got one as a spare, with a new bearing, that one lasted a mounth or something, It´s always fun to loose a tire from under the truck...  I am driving 38-39,5 and arb´s and detroids  I have broken a few ring and pinions and 1 arb locker

I am running frontrangeoffroadfab fullfloating kit now and am LOOOVING it. since then I have broken 1 spindle

I am trying to find a pic for ya...

I worry about my rear differential more than my birfs mainly because they are expensive. When I have the money I am going to try and make a full floating toyota rear axle using a 8.4 center and land cruiser outers.

It's my belief that this is the main reason that they do break.

If heat was never used to remove the bearings then the Third member becomes the weak link IMO.

I broke one, well a 85 year old man did. WHen he hit me with a saturn going about 50 as I was stopped.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

BrotherGrim

I am running 36's and ARB's and stripped some my R&P teeth. I looked at the axles and I see no ware of any kind. I think the problem was the crush sleeve went. But I had that set of R&P and ARB for 10 years.

10years is a decent run..

Solid pinion spacer next time!

BrotherGrim

Solid spacer is already in place. Not a lot of people 10 years ago knew about solid spacers. Now it is the only way to go. I think I would been hard press to find one back when.
