front DS u-joints at Cardan joint
« on: May 28, 2009, 09:25:08 AM »
I ordered the ball kit at 513 u-joints to rebuild my double cardan joint. Something that is odd is the u-joints have different sized yokes. The distance between bearing caps is the same, and the diameter is the same, but one yoke is around 20% larger than the other.  The fact that the part numbers are the same tells me this is wrong, but I wondered if there was a reason one might need to be smaller.  One has a zerk that screws in to one cap, the other has a zerk that screws in to the web of the yoke.

Anyone know which is right?

Well, I tore my double cardan apart last night in machining class. Thankfully the instructor let me use the press. After scraping and washing 20 years of mud and grease off it so I could see the snap rings, it came apart fairly simple. Then it was time for reassembly- Doh!-- the ball kit I bought was incomplete. No spring and retaining ring. So since it has to go back, I'm just taking the u-joints back too. The parking brake cable I bought in this order was too short too, so that makes it 0 for 4. Rockauto had all the parts cheaper anyway.
