what's the right tire ???
« on: May 22, 2009, 06:36:05 AM »
What kind of tire do you guys run on rocky dirt roads , I have run coopers discovers , bfg t/a ,bfg mud ,toyo m/t's . I was thinkin of something new oh yeah swampers also .
31-10.50 is the size i'm thinkin..I drive about 20-30 mi a day on these dirt roads and about the same on
pavement. I don't race my truck on the dirt but I do cruise along 45-50mph makes a nice ride.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.....thanks        :driving:

i am going to run yokohama geolander M/T they do a very good job in the sand and dirt rocks exc. awesome tire for sure i know evryone doesnt like them but id say 98% of them mostly rock crawl them. P.S. if you do alot of dirt road driving and like to run fast try 32psi probably the best for them http://www.yokohamatire.com/tires/geolandar_mt.aspx

BFG...........there is no substitute!  If you do a lot of street driving as well the All-Terrains are the way to go!  I am a little bias though!

I've never been disapointed in bfg all terrains for high speed dirt.  I had a couple sets of maxxis bighorns on some work trucks and the one thing I can say about them is that they track really unusually well on loose marbley gravel...  they wear out fast though.

I've always wanted a set of baja t/a but they are way to expensive.

too bad i just sold a set of projects for $700. BFG a/t's always get flats. gotta go with a harder compound if your on rocky terrain (lucerne valley). A/T's are nice for fire roads. M/T's are nice for going fast over rocky terrain. I typically go out to the desert about twice a month. which consists on barstow, lucerne, and glamis. currently i'm running nitto's terra grapplers and love them! I used to run around with the desert racing crowd till i got into crawling..
Let's put a smile on that face!

If you want swampers, the good ol TSL radial 31x9x50 is a great tire.
If you didn't like the bfg mud  you might not like the swamper though.
Don't get boggers, they don't sidehill, and have no lateral traction for gravel.

If money is an issue, you might want to check out treadwright re-treads.  I know lots of people running them (includign myself) and they are really sweet tires.  Check out their website for tread design and info-mine came on bfg carcasses.....http://www.treadwright.com/

I had bfg km2's too.  I wasn't horribly impressed with them on loose gravel,
but its loose gravel, what does work good?

Every one has their own personal tire preferences.  Boggers are good for what they were built for...just like all tire tread designs, just my  :twocents:

I got a set of the 31's for around 800 last year from the local tire shop in Kellog, Idaho.
Swampers have been hard to find since they closed the plant.  Don't know when they will re-open, maybe they already have, don't know.
Treadwright tires has a tread similar to the TSL in certain tires sizes

Cooper STT Pros. I have had them for 2 years and they are great in the rocks and sand IMHO. Won't get anything else after having these. BFG's and Toyos are good, but Copper surpasses them all I think.
