need info fast
« on: May 09, 2009, 08:16:30 PM »
ok, i got a line on a truck. 94 v6 auto trans, all stock. the guy only wants a $1000 for it, at that price it wont last long. now my question is, are the auto trans ok for DD and a lite trail truck (4" lift, 33's, lockers......) or would i be better off just waiting it out for a manual. any and all info will be appreciated  :yesnod:

Those autos don't do well on real steep hill because the fluid all runs into the transfer case (they share the same fluid), but for a lite trails is should do ok. The V6 in a 94 is known for blowing head gaskets and being under powered.
If you are set on a auto you can set up a tacoma transmission, but you will need push button to shift the transmission and adapter plate for the case so it will drop to the right side (lots of work and money).
If you have money I would look at a tacoma because you are using it for DD / lite trail truck and they are nice trucks.
If you are poor then I would hold out for a 22re with a manual.

i am poor, yes. and good frickin luck trying to find a 22re 3rd gen xtra cab for less than 4g's (unless you have one that you would like to get rid of for a $1000  :crossed: ). i dont have that kind of money. the v6 does not scare me, i have already had one. it was ok. im looking for a cheap beater that i have to work on cause im poor. thats what i wanted to know, the little odds and ins of the auto.

i just sold my 94 4 runner i never had issues with the tranny till i hit 200k then it shifting hard .. but i went thru several head gaskets till i had the heads resurfaced flat .. i picked decent hp and awsome fuel economy compared to what i was getting for 150 k

The auto's are pretty bulletproof and seem to never die... If you get bored with the auto a stick is a simple swap.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

X2

You can put a gear driven case behind a 340h which is the auto in a 3.0 truck. The adapter is 550$ from inchworm. You will also need a 23spline input on the case. A single 4.7 case would be plenty low enough and could be done for about a grand (550$ adapter + 400$ marlin 4.7 23 spline gear set)

If you get this truck and wheel it with the stock tranny and t-case report back on how it does. Not alot of people wheel the auto's and I'm curious if the hill climbing issues are exaggerated.

The auto's can also be torn down and rebuilt with simple hand tools as long as you are careful to keep everything in order.
