Is it just a Northeast thing?

I have tried a few times to remove the drums from my truck so I can free up my e-brake bell cranks.  I have had no such luck yet, but I haven't gotten a chance to us the blue tipped wrench on them yet.  Do the drums on yotas stick on like this everywhere else or is it just a Vermont thing?

You did let off the ebrake right? lol, if so then just wack it with a hammer a couple times, circular motion, should free em

yup, the drums can be really stubborn. Bang 'em around a bit with a soft mallet, and if that doesn't loosen 'em up, then try taking the adjustment all the way out by using a screw driver on the back of the brake assembly so the shoes are pulled away from the drum. Good luck

check to see if the drums have two tapped hole in them inside of the stud holes. if they do just screw in two bolts and it will pop the drum off. thats what the holes are there for!.

Brainless nailed it. Use 2, 3" or 4" bolts & thread them in the holes he mentioned.

Well those answers confirm it.  It is just a northeast thing.  I work in a garage so I am prety familiair with getting drums off.  Around here those threaded holes strip out with just a few cranks of the bolt, and don't pop the drum off.  A few whacks does nothing, I've beat the living poop out of my drums with no luck, more often than not it involves using torches to heat up the drum around the hub, and then hitting it with a hammer.  Boy you west coast guys have it easy.

The brakes are backed out, all that done, the drum will physically not come free from the hub.  The tolerance between the inside of the drum and the flange on the end of the axle shaft is so close that just a bit of rust basically welds the drum on.  The rust here gets so bad that its not uncommon to see toyotas snap in half between the bed and cab, and I literally mean snap in half.

:ack: now that you say that I remember seeing a few imports that came from back east. and the drums where FUN to get off! sorry. I would try rust penatrating oil before the blue wrench.

Vermont is one of the states I have not been to. I have only been as far as Massachusetts. I want to go Vermont & Maine one day.

I will rustproof my truck first

don't they use salt on the roads out there (east). That really messes things up.

blyota91

 They use tons of salt around here, and it sure does mess things up.  Its a huge selling point around here if rigs come from the south, even new jersey and places in that area are much better than here.  If you get something from the real south you're good to go, and if a rig has never seen a vermont winter, that can jack up the price too.
