ticking
« on: Apr 26, 2009, 03:23:10 PM »
I just got a 1990 22RE 4x4 std cab from a friend of mine... Do these engines typically have a ticking sound coming from the top of the motor? It has about 187k on it, seems like it gets a little louder as the engine warms up.... I used to have one about 10 years ago but I can't remember how it sounded....

valves could need an adjustment which is an easy fix.
or it could possible be the timing chain guides have broke and the timing chain is slapping around.

and don't forget about that insane ticking that the injectors make as they grow older.

It sounds like its coming from the left side, where the throttle is

Toyota's are known for the injectors having a decent clicking noise as they get old, not an issue to worry about but make sure that is where it is coming from. Once you learn the noise you generally tune it out and can hear any other noises but if you don't know then it drives you nuts. I threw that out there just so you would look into that possibility and not just think you've got a larger problem. It still could be as suggested by others so check that also. Usually the timing issue is more of a rattling noise and of course lifters is lifters and may need to be adjusted.

Ah ok, I'll look into it and see what happens... This truck has shifting problems also.  It pops out of first most of the time and is hard to get into 3rd... I went to the toyota dealership friday and got a shifter seat bushing, and the shifter cap... I installed them and it didn't fix it.. I guess the syncros are going...

+1 on noisy lifters. If you're going to dig, check the valves as well, 187k is a good age to check the valve lash.

go with the cheapest solution.. pull the valve cover and inspect.. if you have it run a feeler gauge and get the specs out of your manual and if its in spec, start (with little to no oil just what you put on it) the engine and see if the tic got louder, and you can put the Handel of a long flat head screw driver to your ear and the other end to the injectors and you should have your answer
