stoopid carrier bering
« on: Apr 24, 2009, 10:38:21 PM »
OK, i put in a new carrier Bering (driveshaft support) before i tore into the body work. I did not get a chance to drive it until yesterday as i just finished the paint. right away it was squealing like crazy.  i had to drive it for work and took it about 100 miles.  called kragen parts and told them to order me a new one for exchange.
today i swapped em out the Bering came apart from the rubber part of the mount !!!
i put the new one in and sure as anything, the new one was squealing to!!!!  I'm gonna give up soon!
i took of the rear part of the drive shaft from carrier to rear axle and put the truck in gear. started the truck and i can see the drive shaft has some runout.  a decent amount to! so..  looks like i need to take the truck to east county driveshaft for the pros to look at it.
I'm not going to have enough money to have someone go through the front axle rebuild darn it!
anyone else that has had driveshaft troubles please chime in so i can see what the common issues are. thanks

2 piece drivelines aren't cool. I had issues with the carrier bearing in my 85. They don't like lifts much. I would say take a front double cardan yota driveshaft and have it re-tubed for the proper length and run it out back. Also set your pinion angle while your there. No more carrier bearing problems because no more carrier bearing

i would rather have a carrier bearing. i have a retarded 60 inch long shaft that hits everything. im goin to go back to a 2 piece pretty soon and when the bearing goes out im goin to modify the shaft to use a pillow block like oops on here did.

A type of bearing. Never heard of the idea before, but it would make for cool ground clearance. A single driveline is cheap and simple (like me). I'm building a 4runner with duals so my d-line isn't monsterously long.

I have a long bed truck that had a 2 piece rear shaft. I destroyed at least six 4 cylander carrier bearings. Then i started buying the v6 ones and welding them in to the existing carrier frame. i destroyed about to of these which were way stronger. but when i went to duals i got a straight shaft which is way more responsive but less ground clearance.  the problem with the stock ones when you are putting the shaft through a lot of torque it causes the shaft to hinge up and down. sometimes so gnarly in my case that the driver shaft bolts begin to scrape the housing of the carrier bearing just my  :twocents:

After bending four one-piece D-shafts I went back to a two-piece using a pillow block bearing. I have been running it since May of 05 without any problems and no more bent shafts.

Since I took these pictures I have added a rubber blocks to the mount to stop the vibration and put a clearenced CV on the D-shaft to move the pinion up.

It has worked flawlessly on the trail and the limited use on the street (trailer queen). I have had it up to 70 mph with very little vibration and I think that is the tires, 36 x 13.50 IROK bias.

What I had to do to the D-shaft.

nice! i asked east county driveshaft here in el cajon about doing this and they agree that the pillow block is best for a trail only truck.
this is gonna be my daily so i cant do that yet.
when i can afford to buy another Tundra and have cash left over to spend on the yota ill do a pillow block.

as for now i spent 350 bux to have them remake the front shaft as it was run out, a new transfercase output flange, and a few tricks to make the carrier bering last longer.
thanks for the pictutres i like the mount ideas
