Cylinders Question, How much to BORE???
« on: Mar 30, 2009, 09:53:15 PM »
I'm rebuilding my stock 22re (head gasket went out on me) and want to add a little more power to my truck. I want to add a performance cam and want to  bore out the cylinders but not sure how much to go over or what is the max. I told the machine shop I would get back to them. I went to lc engineering and asked but never got a reply. Info or comments are welcomed. I need my truck for work and go offroading on the weekends.  thanks.

.040 oversize,  i went .060 but i have cooling problems when under a load,  the biggest concern is getting a good cam, (LCengineering)  and a good header, 2 1/4 inch exhaust

I agree that .40 is the largest I would go, unless you can have your block checked for core shift.  Although I would not bore any larger than is required to clean up the cylinders. But that is entirely up to you.

When you take your block to the machine shop, they can measure the cyl's and tell you what the block will need to be bored (min) to correct the bores to get rid of imperfections and return them to proper shape.

Also, boring will add to top end HP (barely), but will not do hardly anything for bottom end torque. For torque increase, you would need to "stroke" the engine (longer throw on crank).

I would agree with glen in that .040 should be the max on a 22r block.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

Call me cazy but I pushed it to the max on mine and did the 94 mm bore.
I had all the block work done at LC Engineering so I know that is was done correctly and so far all is fine. I did however up grade the radiator to a dual 1" row aluminum radiator and put a 175* thermostat in to try to head off any cooling problems.

Just wanted to thank you guys for the info regarding bore max for cylinders. Yeah, completely forgot what would be needed to clean the cylinders. Engine ran strong until head gasket gave out. Damn, shame. Got another question, any opinions are where to buy the oversized pistons/rings or camshaft besides lc engineering?

you can get up to .040 oversize from most parts houses, Napa, whatever

as far as the cam, if you want any kind of performance you WANT LCEngineering
i strongly suggest this cam  http://www.toyotacatalog.net/m1webgear/ProductDetails.aspx?PartUniqueID=2B3BCB39-57B7-4E3B-9C29-71F773B35A7B

They have a reputation for good quality parts, and are good prices, too. Be sure to check the "Hot Licks" page for kit prices.

'85 - '95 22r master rebuild kit for $219.
