whiny manual tranny
« on: Sep 30, 2004, 02:35:03 PM »
I've got a '95 4runner with a manual transmission.  Recently it started popping out of first gear into neutral when I start to accelerate off the line; sometimes so violently it feels like somebody hit me from behind.  I've also noticed that it makes a high-pitched whiny noise and vibrates through the stick shift.  It's only noticable when idling and it mostly pops out of gear when starting from an inclined starting position.

Does anybody know what could cause this?  It hasn't always done this and I'm very used to the clutch on this truck.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

check the
1) fluid level and also if there is any metal filings on the magnet/drain plug from worn gears
2) the gear alignment may be off.
3) the bearings may be shot.
4) the clutch may not be aligned properly.

Hope this helps a little with the problem.

Also might want to check if the boot is rubbing against the shift lever and pushing it out of gear....

This is a very common problem.

Begin by replacing the trans handle seat and socket.
We sell them both. It may not be going all the way into gear :crossed:

Or, you may have a worn mainshaft center bearing retrainer plate and/or worn transmission bearings. We also sell a heavy duty machined steel plate. It costs $35 bucks, but the trans must be torn down to install it.
