'79 Pick up Project
« on: Sep 27, 2004, 03:14:12 PM »
Hi all. My name is Dusty and I live in Lubbock, TX.  An old rancher recently told me to haul some trucks off for him. These trucks were an 85 Chevy 1 ton 4x4, 83 Chevy 1 ton 4x4, 79 f250 4x4, 74 f250 4x4, and a 79 toyota 4x4. I was happy to say the least. I've decided to part out all of these trucks except for the yota. I want to to run between 35-37 inch tires and more than likely a v-8. Will the stock axles and transfer case hold up to this, or should I swap to the 3/4 ton ford axles. I want to use the stock transfer case because of the many gearing options. As for the motor, I have looked at both ford 5.0 SEFI swaps and chevy 350 TBI. I know that I want to run fuel injection, but am not sure between the ford and chevy. Any opinions? Which one fits better, cheaper, easier, etc. This truck wont be much of a daily driver and hopefully will be built with the money gotten from the other trucks as I am a poor college student at the moment. Also, what have yall done as far as suspension. I'm thinking of going with a buggy spring setup in the rear and/or pivoting spring perches. What springs seem to work the best. I don't want to attempt a 3 or 4 link set up right now since I want to get this done kind of quick.
Sorry for the long post and thanks for the help.

The 79 Ford axles wont work for you because of the driver side pumpkin..You'll want to run the ones off the chevy...Are they dana 60s or 44s?.If they're 60s,I'll buy both of those trucks, complete.

both of the chev's are 60/14 bolt. I dont want to run those just because i need some money to build this. I already promised one truck to my brother. the other chevy is complete. 454/sm465/np205 (or 203, not sure). I was told this truck runs but needs a starter. How much will you give me for it, or do I need to start a new thread in the classifieds for this?

I guess I have the 21 spline transfer case since it is a 4 cyl. with a 4 speed. Will the transfer case hold up to a pretty well stock chevy 350 or should I go ahead and upgrade to the 23 spline shaft?

Whitetrash, what all has been done to your 350, just so that I can have an idea of what to do to it for cheap? Also, are you injected or carbed?

Just like typical, bored .030" comp 260 cam with matching valvetrain.  Full roller rockers, chromolly pushrods, heavy porting and gasket matching on intake, headers.  Weind stealth intake, hooker headers quadra jet carb.  Nothing too extreme just the good basics and a heavy right foot.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

What will the stock axles hold up to, tire wise? Can I run 38's without blowin up birfield joints everytime out?

38's are probly the max you want to run with stock birfields and no locker.  If you have a locker or a heavy right foot then you would probly need unbreakables.

your selling the 60s :hammer: What are you thinking.  Use the 350, 465, 205 and sell all the toyota stuff, and use the 60 and 14blt.  Or you can keep the toy motor tranny and tcase, and the 60s.

I'd like to keep the 60 and 14 bolt, but im in college right now and the only way i can afford to build this is to sell them. I think im going to use the 465, but adapt the toy case to it just for the available gearing. It will be a lot cheaper to buy a 5:1 gearset than to regear both axles. How much would the yota axles go for anyways?

If the toyota has a 4spd then the axels have 4.37s and you could problaly get 350-400 for the pair with all the steering.  The 60 and the 14blt are combo you'll want when you've broken a few burfields.  You should be able to sell the toyota axels and the rest of the truck parts for enough to put the full size under your truck and buy some 400.00 tcase gears for the toyota.

I was reading a post where a guy put in a 350/sm465 and used the Over The Top adapter to put the yota case behind it. He clocked it up to get everything flush underneath the frame. My question is could you rotate the yota case the other way, like a 300 flip kit for a tj, and run the ford 3/4 ton axles with the driver side pumpkin? The 60 up front would be nice, but i've already got a bronco on one ton stuff and my brother has a willys on 1 ton axles and im just wanting to give the lightwieght thing a shot. 60's are nice, but they're freakin heavy.
