I NEED HELP!
« on: Mar 13, 2009, 08:23:59 PM »
I have a problem, on the way home today my 4 runner overheated. It is a new 22-re engine (approx 3000 miles). The wierd thing is that the heater would not get hot, It stayed freezing cold. The radiator and it's hoses were piping hot though.
WTF is wrong?? is there a line somewhere that is clogged. When I did the re-build I did a full coolant replacement. I did have to put some Stop Leak in the radiator cause it had a little pin hole in it.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks for your help guys.

I doubt some stop leak clogged the whole system up.  My bet is the water either wasn't completely full or you have a leak somewhere.  Either way if the heater wasn't working there was no water in the heater core.

Sounds like there is air in the system. That can cause low/no heat. Stop-leak can also settle in the heater core and clog it up.

Ok, sounds like the verdict is in. I'm going to go flush my whole system. To clarify, the heater/cooling system has been working fine this whole time. It just started doing this last night. I know that there is no leak, however it is possible that air could be in the system somewhere.  Is it going to hurt anything if I pull the hoses and run water through my system with a garden hose to flush everything out?

Thanks a bunch guys.

Hose won't hurt at all, just don't do it if the engine is not running and is hot. If the engine is hot just start it an let it idle while feeding the hose water in. If it's cold just flush through, best way is to have the engine running while doing it though. When filling back up make sure to get the air bubbles out if big enough it can act just like a clog or thermostat an restrict flow causing you to overheat.

They make those fancy T's that you splice into a heater line, and it gives you a connection for your garden hose.  It also comes with a cap.  :twocents:

Question, are you running a thermostat? If not you could cause overheating since the proper restriction of flow isn't happening and the coolant may not have the proper amount of time to cool in the radiator. This is a common mistake made by people thinking that not running one will make it run cooler. This may work in a short run to the mall but over a period of time driving down the road you will get slowly hotter and hotter.

Ya i'm running a t-stat. As soon as my drive way gets some sun on it, so I don't freeze to death, i'm going to go out and get this done. This is my primary vehicle at the moment, so I NEED to have this fixed today.

I'll let ya know how it goes.

Well I think it's fixed. I pulled the hoses and flushed the radiator and heater core, and block until they all ran clear. There was a bunch of nasty rust colored coolant that came out. I then re-filled it, and let it idle for like 20 min, and the heater was still not blowing warm. So then I burned it around for about 10 min and it was the temp gauge was starting to heat up, but still no warm air. Then it was like the clog let loose, all the sudden the cold air got hot, and the temp went down. I don't know if I should drain and re-flush, but i'll leave it for now and see how she does.
Thanks a ton for the advise guys.

X2, then don't forget to run the front end up a steep incline and run it with the heater on for 15-20 minutes to force all the air bubbles up toward the radiator, then top off coolant again and you should be done.

10-4 will do. I just drove it 50 miles or so and it seemed to be fine. But i'll re-flush for sure when I have some more time.
