Yes, I'm new here so I don't want to hear any crap!! I am in the market for crossover steering for my 85 and I was gonna use Marlins kit but my truck has manual steering and I was gonna convert to power while I have it appart. What are all the parts that I need to do this conversion? And yes, I mean every part. Even down to the hoses. Any help would be appreciated!

If you are going to run Marlin's kit...you'll need an IFS steering box, bolts and sleeves to mount it, power steering res. with hi and low lines, pump with brackets, belt, crank pulley with extra groove to accept the belt, Dexron III fluid, PS cooler, and some patience.  Good luck.

I take it youve been trying to get info on pirates havent you.  You wont get anything but maybe a little ribbing here.  Lowgeared covered what you'll need but remember to get the steering shaft from the ifs truck as well.  The ifs shaft has about 2" more slip in it to move the box forward if need be.

Hey WT, I didn't realize they were longer.  When I did mine, I knocked the pins out of the shaft and lengthened it that way.  Once I got it to where I needed it I tacked it into place, pulled it back off and welded it together.  I am assuming those pins were meant to break in an accident so the impact didn't come into the cab.  I guess if I wreck now, I'll be looking a lot more sexy with a Toyota steering wheel rammed through my chest.     The older ones 79-83, from what I've seen actually had to have a piece of tube added to make them long enough.

yup, he must have tried to get some info from pirates

wmflyfisher- If you're into fabrication, then I would highly recommend using a newer style power steering pump. Im talking about the one from 89+ V6 trucks and 96+ 4cyl engines.

Here's a pic I just found on the net of the pump Im talking about, this from a 3.4l V6:

The reason I recommend this style pump is because it's all intact. The reservoir sits on top as apposed to the early hilux version (79-95 4cyl) that had a remote reservoir that mounted over the drivers wheel well. The new style only uses 2 lines as apposed to the 4 lines of the older style. So their less chance of leaking and its much cleaner.

Now for the fabrication part, I've never seen anyone do this, and further more I've not even looked at a 22R/E/TE to see if their is even enough height below the hood line to mount it, but you would have to make your own bracket, or possibly modify the stock bracket, to adapt this new pump.

But if you could use it, then it would be a whole lot less mess in your engine bay and it would look really trick-

I just thought about it, and that above V6 pump mounts on the left side of the engine. You might want to look into the same style pump on the T100 4cyl and Tacoma 4cyl engines as they mount on the right side, same as the hilux.

Let me check some pics, hang on....
yup, heres a pic of the one on my engine, note it's on the drivers side:

Lowgeared the pins are meant to shear as you said.  On my 84 I had just pulled the shaft apart and pulled out enought to get to the steering box, well it would bind a bit when turning so on the maiden voyage I hopped out and tok a look.  I noticed that there wasnt enough shaft contact, (maybe 1-1 1/2" :smack:  Needless to say I dro9ve VERY SLOWELY back to the shop and swapped shafts!  Now its just fine :gap:

How much contact should there be to be safe?  Never really thought about it and never checked.  I am sure mine is only an inch or two also.

I fabricate some but not much. I would be scared to try anything with that. I'm probably gonna just stick with the original setup. Thanks for the info anyway though!

I checked on a few used gears at some junk yards today and found one for 75 bucks. Is this a good price? Also, Will any box fit from an 86 to 95 4x4 and is the 4cyl one different than the V6 one? The guy at the junk yard said the one he had was listed for a 92 to 95 pickup. Is this the same one as the 86?
