3rz idling @ 1250 rpm?
« on: Feb 15, 2009, 06:03:12 PM »
I swapped a 2002 3rz into my 87 pickup and it runs good except it idles at like 1250rpm. What would cause this and how can i fix it?

I had a similiar issue when I installed my 2003 2rz.  I can't remember the exact RPM but it would not idle down, it also sounded like it was sucking alot of air.  The problem was the idle air control valve was stuck.  After taking it apart to unstick it and clean it up, it idle perfect.  Good luck

Mine sounds the same way. Where is the idle ait control valve on the motor?

I am reading on ttora.com that alot of people say it is normal for the motor to idle at 1200-1500 till it warms up and go's into closed loop and then should drop down. Does this sound right?

maybe a bad coolant sensor or bad TPS Sensor.

That is correct. Also check the coolant temp sensor have seen a bunch of them out and cause a high idle on the 2 & 3rz's

It sound like the most common problem is the Idle air control valve get stuck. So i am going to clean that. I was alos reading that these motors have a idle up mode for the power steering. I am wondering if thats affected by me running a PSC Tc power steering pump for my ram assist. If its not the Iac i am going to try the thermostat and look into the coolant temp sensor.

my 1996 2rz does the same thing... I am wondering if my issue is the coolant temp sensor though because my temp guage doesnt work either but I am not sure if the 2rz sensor will even work with my 1989 V6 guage so I have been kinda lost on this one ??? any ideas if my 2rz sensor should run my v6 guage?

My 3rz temp sensor works with my turbo sr5 gauge as far as i know. When i pulled my truck out of the garage and onto the trailer the idle went up to 1500-1600rpms. When i get it back from the exhaust shop i am going to start with the iac and then the temp sensor.

My 2002 3rz did this when I got it. It was the Idle Air Control valve like mentioned. I bought a factory part and it was about 200 dollars. Pricey little thing but i for sure think its that.

well on a different engine (3.0 V6) i had to swap out my Enginge Coolant Temp Sensor and it fixed my guage, and made it run less lean than before. also helped high idle problem some.

made it run richer ??? ya I thought ablout putting a 3.0l temp sensor on it but the sensor drives the gauge as well as sends a signal to the ECU so I dont think the ECU would be very fond of a different ohm range coming in for coolant temp.... I am about ready to just go buy some autometer gauges and say to hell with the stockers!

yea, my truck has lots of problems, but it did help with my lean condition.

There are two coolant temp sensors, one for the guage one for the ecu.

The one at the rear of the head is for the ecu,the guage sensor is near the thermostat.

You're saying by the thermostat, but my thermostat is on the driver side of the engine, not on the passenger side. That's just the top coolant inlet pipe that has the other sensor.

Are you running the sensor that is on the high pressure ps line? Even so it would not raise the idle that high.
Did you let the engine get to operating temp? If you did my guess is the iac.

If you have a 96 2rz you dont need the resistor.

Figured with a 2rz your truck was 22re stock. If it was me i would install 4cyl cluster and it will work with no other mods.

That looks the same as all the third gen tachs that I have played with. That pic shows tach removed from the cluster possible why it looks different to you
