My temp gauge in my 22re seems to go crazy from time to time, and I don't know if I can trust it.  It will work fine for awhile, can be a week or months, then I will be driving down the road and notice the gauge in the red.  This has happened many times, with no ill consequences.  And occasionaly when it has one its spells when I turn the key to on and the engine is cold the gauge spikes all the way to hot and then slowly comes back down to cold.  What should I be checking here?  it seems to do more crazy things when I run the heat too.

i would check my connections behind the dash,  then make sure the temp sensor is good :dunno:

Check your coolant level. The sender is pretty high up in the engine and it could be in steam pocket if the coolant level is low.

I checked my coolant level, its fine, but it will spike to max hot when the engine is ice cold when I turn it on in the morning or whenever.

swap out your temp sensor,  its easy to get to and should be fairly cheap
