Haven't done a "one wire" on a Toy but did it on earlier Chevys. I got a pigtail from NAPA that had a 5 ohm resistor on it with a hot lead. This plugs into the alternator and the hot lead just jumps to the power lug on the alternator. Then you run from the lug to your system, super simple. Oh BTW, with the new 5 ohm resistor, you need to remove the resistor inside the alternator, I think it's like 35 ohm. Worked great on my Chevelle.  :shocking:

You need a 213-4011 alternator to be easily compatible and mounted.  The 213-4711 is designed for a serpentine belt setup and has totally different mounting and plugs.  The 4011 is only a 65+ amp but its cheap and rather reliable.  I cant remember the pn#'s for the higher amp alternator in that series, but if memory serves get one for a 84 Camaro with a/c and power windows.  It should be 108 amp.

if i was going to spend that kinda money and still have to do some changes id just go all the way and get a premier power welder set up thabks thow
i was thinking more of ahigher gm alt in the same series as what WT was saying
mabey someone can tell me why my brand new alt is charging intermitly
thought id throw it in

The alternator on my 84 is a big case gm, it came off of a 86ish Buick Regal.  Im not sure if there would be room for that big of an alt but its worth a shot.  The Camaro alternator will work fine as all that they changed ws the pulley.  The mounting is still the same as the usual alternators.  Get that and a vrc-148 and your set.

I have done it 2 years ago.
It's very simple all you need is 2wire GM ALT
http://www.oldengine.org/unfaq/10si.htm
Terminal#2 and BAT (jumper)goes to Batt +terminal
Terminal#1 goes to voltmeter

Sorry it's 12si GM alter.
Wiring are same i had to rebuild it so on idle i got 80~100 amp which is more then enough for my use.

WHITE_TRASH

Voltage Regulator Connector #148Thats the Napa pn# for the plug youd need for the alternator.

kyle_22r

do those alts need a regulator?  i'd love to step up to an 80 or 100 amp alternator

my '79 has a regulator, i'd like to be able to ditch it and only want 2 wires( one for the battery, one for the idiot light).

WHITE_TRASH

Its internaly regulated.

12SI is the best GM alter.(i believe mine came off from 89 chevy pick up truck)
It's compact yet can easlly upgrade to hi output AMPs (local alterator shop upgrade mine)
It's simple as far as wiring concern and pully is intercahanable with toy v-belt
There is site regarding about GM alter(i will post asap)

Hey! it's dirt cheap and GM alter very reliable, last forever, best of all there's ton of'um out there at junk yard.
Try to upgrade toy alter to  Hi amps you'll have to spend 300+  :(
I had spend 80.00 total with 100amps on idle.... not bad at all :)
