custom 22re intake

i have an 88 with a 22re and i wanted to do some kind of custom intake to save over buying the $200 k&n kit.  has anyone done anything that worked good.  it seems like i could just buy a k&n cone filter and make some kind of plate to mount it.  anyone do anything like the k&n kit that worked out good?

did just what your thinkin, bought the biggest k&n cone filter and used some sprinkler parts to install it! i also swapper the intake with the battery to move it away from the hot exhaust.  love it.  I think it did more than the header and 2 1/4" exhaust i did around that same time

is that the one on ebay that says it's for like 89-90.  i don't see any for an 88 but i assume they will work anyways.  do you remember what the titale was on yours?

yes it is. they all work. i have a 86 and i was like ok this is gay, then i reilized it all the same. just make brackets so its not floppin there. it came to $20 shipped, can't beat the price

Personally I think the FIPK is a waste. You are sucking underhood HOT air. So whatever gains you got from better airflow are wasted on the hot air it's sucking.  I watched it get proven on a 7M-GTE Supra that a K&N drop in to the stock housing made MORE hp then the Cone sucking hot under hood air. Till they installed a heat sheild to prevent the Cone from getting underhood air it did not make any more power.

My second issue is on a 4x4 your going to have issues with water most places. With the stock box on my 86 I can pull the snorkle and get it out of the grill and turn it somewhat vertical for deep water. If water gets splashed under the hood the filter element is hanging in such a way that it is fairly well protected. That cone is just going to mop up the water. If you have a lot of mud and water where you play you might want to think about that.

I haven't gotten it yet but I'll let you know what I think.  It claims to be TRD, if it is or not I don't really care, it looks like a pretty nice setup.  If you go to ebay and just type in toyota truck intake or something similar to that you can find a few different styles, they all come with the adapter and some sort of filter, most are priced lower than this too.  The reason I bought it is becuase I have a cam, header, high flow cat, and 2-1/4" exhaust, so I thought I would try something a little different on the intake side.

yes u are right about water getting to the cone. happened to me twice. i thought about buying a precharger for it but im just gonna move inside the cab now.
