Synthetic Winch Line - Options
« on: Jan 27, 2009, 12:07:53 PM »
I have a Warn M8000 on order and am considering going with a synthetic winch rope for added safety and I hate unnecessary weight.

I know that not all of the available products are equal in quality or ease of installation, I want a bolt-on product.  Here are some of the options that I have found:

http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/recovery/ropes.htm
5/16" x 100', 13,700lb winch rope, $191

http://www.gorillawinches.com/winch-accessories/synthetic-winch-ropes/blue-steel-92-recovery-winch-synthetic-rope.html
5/16" x 92', 13,400lb winch rope, $130 - doesn't appear to include an abrasion sleeve, but they are cheap from rockstomper.

Are all the blue ropes the same material?  :dunno:
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved

It might be worth your time to go to a large boating shop. They should have synthetic winch line sold by the foot and a selection of thimbles, hooks and sleeves. They can also splice your line in no time, so you can put any thimble you want on your line.

I have found that shops that specialize in farming, boat and trucking equipment usually have good prices and alot of answers for your questions.

Dont mean to your thread jack....

A question I have is length, When I get mine I want to have the longest rope possible (just in case). If the winch comes with say 100' of 5/16 wire cable, am I limited to that length and size if I switch to synthetic? Could I go with 3/8ths x 125'?

Back on topic...

Both of those options look like they should work and at about $200 seems like a good cost. However I think that thimble/loop end looks a little weak from that 1st pic.

I have the same winch and i run 125' of 5/16 amsteel blue from rockstomper. I think you can only fit 100' of 3/8 if thats what you go with.
