Looks sweet!  I love 22re-ed 2nd Gen Runners, especially those like yours with 90-91 "TOYOTA" truck grills!

You just don't see a lot of 2nd Gen 4Runners with 4cyl engines, and usually if you think you've spotted one, it is actually a 3VZE model with a missing "V6" grill badge.

Did yours come with a G58 tranny?  I'd like to know if any 4cyl 5sp 2nd Gen Runners ever came with other trannies besides the G58, such as W56s.

My dad's 95 Runner came with the 26 spline G58; my 93 came with the same so I swapped it with an R151F in order to run gear-driven transfer cases.  It's kind of a bummer not to have the W56 straight from the factory.

I used to have an automatic 1990 4cyl Runner that had an A340H (possibly ???), which is the only stock, (non-ADD), 4cyl, 2nd Gen 4Runner that I have ever seen.  Needless to say that set-up wasn't the beastiest performer at high elevations in Northern Arizona!

As far as I know they only came with with the G58. I have a R151F sitting in my garage waiting for dual cases. I have never seen a 1990 4cyl 4runner with an automatic, I didn't think that they made them. I know that you can put in a A340F out of a tacoma that will allow you to run duals.

I had one--It was in my first truck!  I still have the 1990 FSM for it.

Funny thing is that my Auto 4cyl 4Runner was also fully loaded, with power locks, power windows, chrome bumpers (not gray), A/C, cruise, tilt, AM/FM radio, cassette player, sun roof, but it still had manual locking hubs for the 4WD.  The original owner was from Cottonwood, AZ, and he got sick of suffering up certain sections of the I-17N at sub 60MPH speeds.  He sold it to my family at about 26,000 miles, and we kept it for another 200,000 thereafter.  It got the LCE dual row chain fix at 175,000, but nothing else.

You talk about truly gutless--I had that ECT Power button pushed-in full-time, AND even when the gears held off shifting until the engine hit 4000 RPMs, it was still unbelievably slow.  I always wondered if that ECT button worked better with a V6.

I wish that I still had a pic so I could post it in the "show off your pin stripes" thread.  It had these god-awful Reebok logo looking decals that covered half of the rear doors and most of the front doors.

My highschool friends talked a lot of :pokinit: back then because it didn't have a V6, and to some degree they were justified.

Wise choice!

I want to meet the person who HAS used Marlin's Taco box to adapt the G58 for lower gears and/or duals.  I remember that I searched a ton to find out how to do this, only to learn that the G58's shift rail height and its 26 splines made this mod pretty tough.  The universal response was lose the G58 and get an W56 or an R151F.  I imagine that you two (whokrz and boggerrunner) had similar experiences; hence, your swaps/planned swap to W56/R151F trannies, right?
