« on: Dec 31, 2008, 12:27:03 PM »
im looking to replace my clutch on my 1980 toyota short bed pickup 4wd of course. i am interested in swaping the tranny out and replaceing it with a 5spd of a later model. which tranny should i go that would allow me to have a direct bolt on without too much trouble? thanks inadvance.

Is it a 20R or 22R motor? Either way, though, I think any of the toyota 4x4 trannys will bolt up, maybe a bellhousing swap.?  But I do know that some of the trannys dont have a removable bellhousing.(I've had one crack.) So, if that is the case, I would go with the tranny that was used in the 85' efi trucks/4runners.....marlin has got em'

any tranny which looks like this

L50 and L52 5spds, they are in 81-83 trucks

any other later 5 speeds will not bolt in, they will bolt to the engine fine, but they are longer and will require driveshaft modification, crossmember move, and cutting the floor

I did the same swap. If you find the donor tranny still in the truck. Take the slave cyl., clutch fork and shifter too.
I replaced my clutch and flywheel from Marlin. The 1200HD feels great!!!
Here is a pic to motivate you.

I also bought new bolts for the flywheel.

Yes, you can use the same transfercase.  I had an 81 truck with a G54 in it.  I had a budbuilt crossmember that bolted to the stock location.

you'll probably have to grind down the input shaft. early ones were a fuseless design and didn't neck down after the splines which won't allow them to engage fully  on a late model trans.

what about the clutch set up? can i use the same 1980 clutch disc n pressure plate and flywheel with the later model 5spd transmission?
