Anybody ever broke a detroit?
« on: Dec 27, 2008, 10:55:57 PM »
Sheared all 4 studs on my steering arm then wasted my birf. Put it back together and wasted the new birf a quater mile later. While trying to get home on the trail my locker seemed to lock sometimes and not others wondering is it f****ed or since the driver's side wasn't spinning it wasn't locking? Input would be great  :crossed:

yea, I think you can jack the front end up lock the hubs and turn one tire and it should lock and spin both tires, might not sound good with a broken birf though :dunno:

I heard its not good to run a detroit up front with birfs, If the birf pops then it wipes out your detroit. Then you have a 600 dollar paper weight.

on my detroit I gotta spin the drive shaft, if I spin a tire it just acts like an open diff.

send me the "paperweight"!

Detroits (carrier style) are rebuildable. I broke mine when my inner and outer hub gears blew stripping the outer splines on the long (bobbys hub gear so all was warranteed, Thanks Bobby!) it sheared 2 teeth off of the inner locking mechanism on the detroit and wedged the driver side "open". Part was about $180 from eaton but better than having to replace the whole thing!

Call me lucky but i broke a few birfs before i got my longs and it never broke my detroit.  Just took the splines off the inner axle where it goes into the birf :dunno:
