I really want to see how these turn out, i got spares that i want to get done as well. So when your welding around the bottom of the bell do you close up the holes for the large balls a bit? Like to add more material in those 6 sections? Or just on the outter lip?

Oh and does anyone know what type of cryo treament is needed if i went to a local heat treat company just for a price idea? Like is there a rockwell hardness number or somthing to go by?
91 toy truggy on h2 injection, hacked n chopped n locked n SAS'd rolling 36" IROKS........doubler comming soon

Birfailed

when I sent things off it was cryod to -350F and then heated to a number I forgot.  They don't go by a rockwell hardness or anything, just how long it takes by size

Right on, I'll have to ask them about it i guess. They might know if i tell them it was cyro'd to -350F.

big ring little ring...high strength...cryo this, cryo that... i think yall are overlooking the most important metallurgical factor...

how do you plan on welding case hardened machine steel, and expect no surface fractures???

cuz last time i checked, a bearing race is full of nickel, molybdenum, silicone and other friction inhibiting alloys..... that are designed for wear resistance, not strength, since races are pressed inside whatever their supposed to fit inside so it takes the pressure and the race provides mobility with the least amount of resistance....

machined case hardened parts such as axleshafts, BIRFIELDS, ring gears, spiders, pinions, transmission parts... they all carry some or most of those friction inhibiting alloys, the the case hardening makes them stronger, but soooo brittle, its unreal....and when you weld case hardened :pokinit:, you create a metric :pokinit: ton of stress fractures, some not even visible to the naked eye, that when stressed, haha ill pass on the involvement of that...

and when all that extra :pokinit: in the knuckle ball comes apart, start looking for another housing... just lettin ya in on a different point of view....

thats b/c the metal is impregnated with oil/grease....you'll have to bring the metal to a temperature of 750-850 degrees for an extended period of time to get the petroleum out of it....then cool it of slow as hell, then weld it...which is right around when 3 posts up will occur....

yet this has been done before and is working great for a few people out there still running these

Stinky

i never said it couldnt be done, im just lettin you know what you're actually doing to the metal... i wouldnt run it, doesnt seem worth it to me, IMHO, sell your spares and get longs, and then your problems ALMOST go away... and at least you have a warranty...

and ya, youre only runnin a 22re n 36s, but duals and the weight of the runner effect drivetrain stress more than you think...

take a lot of close up pics of em when you weld them, im kind of interested in this.... and whats the part number on the bearing race...  curiosity strikes
