Yes you need it.

Without it, the rear brakes will lock up.

Not the best idea to take it off.  If you do, then get rid of the return line and stick a $40 adjustable unit in there.   You can even mount it in the cab for on the fly adjustability.  That lspv adjusts your brakes depending on the load your carrying.

Mine in the engine bay at middle far right.

Fancy, I used a zip tie before getting rid of it.  I do like being able to adjust rear proportion, for weight.  Even with tires over 33"

You guys runnin without em have a different setup I believe.  I am running rear GM disks and calipers.  So the prop valve mod works really well for me.

Heres what i did on my 82 pickup....same idea as the heim joint one, but using scrap of aluminum angle and an eye bolt I had layin around the garage...cost??? $0

I will say that in the recent wet weather I have been able to lock up my brakes quite easily if i press them hard, but I think that i can tune the valve in better. I havent touched it since i cut the rod off...

If you find the rear brakes locking up to easy you can install an adjustable P-valve. FROR sell a kit with all the brake line adapters for the brake lines or you can get one from Summit and source the adapters fittings.

FROR P-valve:

I hope you don't find out the hard way, but if you hit the brakes hard when moving you won't like the results.
I run 35's and when I just tied it up and would get on the brakes hard the rears would lock up ever time. So I fabed up one like the one above and adjusted it so the rears would not lock up, works great.

I had a friend that just cut the rod and didn't put any adjuster on it.  It just hangs their.  Is that bad??  Im planning on taking off mine and I wonder if it would be better to take the whole piece out.  It leaks a bit of break fluid and that kind of scares me.  Any suggestions??

with it hanging there you have very little brakes. best thing to do is take it out and replace it with the above mesioned one. i hate the stock ones, had bad experiences with buying used ones and them not working either(went through 3) i ended up running all 4 brakes off the front brake port on the master and plugging the other port. worked fine
