you have a weber on there??  sounds like the  fuel jets are too small, you need to "richen" it up a bit

Sounds like the diaphragm in the in the carb has a hole in it, or has gone bye bye.

My 80 with an 84 22R did this exact thing and it was the Diaphragm, funny thing is my 86 is starting to do this right now and I'm planning on checking it out next week.

It ain't so bad, if you have trouble remembering where everything goes just color code or number code everything. Should be a vacuum hose routing diagram somewhere under the hood too.

My 84 22r did the same thing about 15 years ago. I changed the ignition wires and that fixed it. No more sputtering.

make sure the choke kicks off by opening the butterflies, check this by taking off the air filter assy. top cover and look at the carb.  vacuum leaks can prevent it from operating under speeds over 5mph.  smell the exhaust, is it rich(lots of fuel)?  look  at the choke if ok check the plugs and wires for a fouled plug or bad cap n wires.  last resort check the diaphram in the carb/clogged jets.   :usa:  good luck
