3.0 to 22re swap
« on: Nov 16, 2008, 05:51:45 PM »
Ok so i am just thinking  there are alot of nice 3.0 trucks and 4 runners around  but alot have high miles and I am not a huge fan of the 3.0  what all would be involved in going to the 4 cyl ? and why dont more people just do that ?

I was thinking of doing this with the 3RZ in an '88 3.0 4Runner with a blown engine.  I was going to swap it into my '94 pickup but why not just drop the whole drivetrain in the 4Runner?  There are alot of 3.0 rigs running around in "old man daily driver" untampered condition and we tend to write the 3.0 trucks off but it might be a good place to look for clean builders.

it's easier to stay with a V6. Mounts/wiring etc. 3.4 is the way to go.

I said no. I vote for a 3.4, it bolts to the existing mounts on the frame

yea the 3.0 isnt the greatest, but why would you wanna go to a smaller engine for all the work itd take? might as well go 3.4 or 4.3. :twocents:

the 3.4 is the way to go.... motor mounts bolt up, bellhousing bolts up and the wiring is easy!

The reason i ask is my last 4 runner had a 22re and i loved it very easy to work on and you can get parts resonable    My new 4 runner is a 3.0 5speed  although its not the end of the world to work on its deffinetly not a fun engine to mess with  . Plus you can find a 22re alot cheeper than a 3.4   Dont get me wrong i would love to have a 3.4 but the fact is the truck was never made for a 3.4 it was made for a 22r or 3.0  so i would think it would be a eiaser swap ?

whats your budget.... 3.4 will cost you some coin... 22re would be much cheaper.

If i had a 2nd gen runner then yes i would say 3.4  but i have a 1st gen  and they are lighter   and i didnt have a problem with the power of my old 4runner with 22re .  Most likely i will just do the head gaskets and be done with it   and start gathering parts to do a swap later .

those damn 20 and 22's are flippin bullet proof!! if you can deal with not having a whole lot of extra power and are doin it on a 2000 budget i'd do a 22re swap and throw some nice upgrades on the engine!

Ya my guess is  w56 trans 22re engine  Gear drive case and harness ? what else . pretty much what i think i will do is Buy a trans and dual case set up from Marlin  and then get a 22re and do a Engbldr rebuild on it . I can find v6 Toyotas all the time for cheap but in real nice shape   But the 3.4 is still pretty pricey .

best bet is to find a rolled yota with a 22re w56 and pull the drivetrain out and the wiring harness!! then part out the rest of the vehicle.....

FL     I just found a real nice 4runner  that has the 22r I can buy the truck   Cheaper than it will cost  to fix my 4 runner   The only thing i am wondering about is it is a carbed 4 runner  and its been a while since i have had a carbed Yota   I dont see why it would be a problem though . I just really hate this v6  I just cant see putting over 3000 into a 3.0 that has 178,000 miles on it   . But on the plus side  it would have all new gaskets and seals  and new Clutch T-belt  I duno just seems hi to me   . IF i had time i would do it my self  But somehow i am a lucky one right now and i got very busy with work  when alot of people are  struggleing right now .  But if i cant get to work Lol  none of this means nothing .
