'96 chevy rear end problem
« on: Nov 10, 2008, 02:46:29 PM »
Posting this for my brother, he's at a loss.

His 1/2 ton chevy pickup is grinding when he turns a corner, at pretty much any speed.  The sound is noticable, both in and out of the cab.  He's narrowed the sound down to his rear end, but from there he is stumped.  The ujoints are tight and in phase, and he's had a shop pull the diff cover off and poke around, mechanic said everything is fine.  I haven't looked at it myself, and am not sure what I'd see that the mechanic didn't.  (Its a reputable shop, we've had a good amount of work done there in the past).

It supposedly has a factory limited slip in it, not sure if its binding up or what.  :dunno:  Like I said, I haven't looked at it myself, and everything else seems to be good.  Wheel bearings pass the shake test, ujoints are fine (as mentioned).  Any other ideas?

I'm with you on the first one.  I don't think he's done much (if any) wheeling, he's pulled my dad's ski boat a few times, I'm not sure about the 3rd.  He's 19, and drives like it, so the third option is possible.
