Try pulling the plugs and drying out the distributor.  And it is idle..

i think my problem is in the carb because if i mess with it like carb clean it will run till it has to just idle then it slowly starts to die out then about 1000 it just craps out

X2, distributor cap HAS to come off and get checked and dried out, as well as all the distributor electronics.  Napa carries a spray for just this purpose, just can't remember what it's called.  How long have you run it since?  If it's in the carb it would have cleaned out after a few minutes at most.  I'd also grab a can of HEET and poor it in the tank.  It should help flush out any water that may be lingering in the float bowl if you somehow got some in there.

sounds like the starter is going out, and just happened to work when you tried it?

If it still won't idle after you dry the distributor, open the hood and look at the little fuel level window on the front of the carb. Rev it till it clears out then let off the gas and watch the fuel level in that window. After you let off the gas the fuel level should go up and stay somewhere inbetween the two little metal tab looking things on the outside of that window. If the fuel in that window exceeds past the top tab then you could have sucked up some dirt or something causing the float in the carb to stick.

When I first got my license and my old truck I went mudding a few times and sucked some mud into the carb and had this same problem.

Mine does that from time to time.  Try turning off everything - the lights, the radio, a/c /blower motor, and so on, then starting it.  If the battery isn't putting out enough voltage to trip the relay attached to the clutch pedal sensor, nothing happens.(also try pressing the clutch bypass switch)   In my case, it's a combination of cold weather, older battery, lights and radio on... so I'm just in the habit of starting it with all of that off in the winter.
