Unlock the hubs so it doesn't spin

I think they still make those boots that you wrap around the joint and screw together.

Should be fine with part-time 4wd...

those wrap around boots suck.

What kind of tools don't you have?  there aren't any special tools needed.  All you've got to do is unbolt the 6 bolts holding the axle to the stub shaft that goes into the diff, pull the hub off, and take off the snap ring (which you can get off with two screwdrivers).  Then its just an issue of manuevering the axle until you can get it to slide free.

Like has been said, if you have simple tools you have enough to take it off...

Step 1. Food/Drink while you are working
Step 2. Crank the Stereo up!
Step 3. Tear it apart...
Step 4. Fix it
Step 5. Put it together...
Step 6. Drive it like you stole it....    :burnout:
Step 7. Remember to turn your radio off so your battery doesn't go dead...     :attention:

Dang 4 hours labor man I'm in the wrong business....... oh wait I am in that business. :gap:

Even a novice could tackle that in about an hour. I'd look for a different shop if you don't think you can do it yourself.

The wrap around boots work.  but, they're tricky.

1: the things must be installed without any grease and then you need to epoxy the seam together with a flexible epoxy for that type of plastic(some kits include it).  Wait 24 hours.  Then you'll need a syringe or similar to force the oil in through the small gap at the ends(the normal directions are useless)  then you clamp the ends off.

Any oil at all on that seam and it won't work right.

I'd do this and kludge by for a few months at a time until you can SAS it.   Good for the occasional weekend driving(doesn't matter otherwise if you are in 2wd with the hubs unlocked - nothing moves anyways)

Oh - huge hunt to clean the CVs themselves without a total disassembly - get an old water pik at a garage sale and some very thin machine oil(non synthetic).  Super messy as you might imagine...   Mineral oil might also work in a pinch, but machine oil usually works just as well and you don't get any weird oil/water/mineral reactions.  Of course, a full disassembly works best.

IIRC Dorman makes a solvent sealed boot kit.  People report these lasting upwards of 5K miles in FWD cars.

An easier way to do it, IMO.  Doesn't require a complete disassembly.

Easiest of all would be to go to a junkyard and find a good CV axle, and just replace the whole thing. :gap:

Sounds like replacing the CV is a lot easier than the method you described, it isn't really that big of a job at all. The CV halfshaft will run you about 60-70 bucks. Hell you don't even have to lift it off the ground.

But I can't break loose the bolts holding it to the transfer case. I have to take it to a shop.

Maybe its not the transfer case, but the axles are bolted to the front rear, and I can't break them loose useing a breaker bar.

are you talking about the 6 bolts holding the axle to the stub shafts that go into the differential.

1)Lock your hubs.
2)set down your purse.
3)put a socket over the nut
4)crank on it with a breaker bar.  If it doesn't work, use a cheater bar (hi lift jack handle, piece of pipe, whatever) and some PB blaster.  Feel free to give the breaker bar a kick or a hit with a hammer.
