Toyota Bed Trailer for Yeller
« on: Sep 28, 2008, 04:01:08 PM »
I was given a early 80's Toyota trailer a couple years ago.

Figured I would fix it up to take on trips. The bed was toast so I found an later 80's long bed to put on it for free that was in better shape. The later bed was missing the mount from the bed to the frame so I made one to replace the missing part. Need to install some flexible fender flares still.

With a load on the tires would mash the fenders. That needed to be fixed next. Threw a pair of 6" springs that were in the shed under it with a set of home made shackels. Had an extra pair of rancho 9000 shocks sitting around so those got thrown on too. Fabbed up some bumpstop extensions & all was good. I plan to throw the extra 90's 4wd rear axle under it in the future. Rolling spare parts for the runner lol

Next it needed a tray in the front. Picked up a 1/2" sheet of aircraft aluminum from Boeing Surplus & made one. This will eventually support a battery box to power the auxillary fuel pump for the gas tank going back in. 15 extra gallons of fuel will be nice.

Found a canopy a couple months ago for 75 bucks. Painted it to match the trailer last week. I am ordering the plastic trim next week to cover the screws

When the later model 4wd axle goes in it will be soa. The shocks are 5000's (not 9000 series, my goof) so they should still work with the soa. I will probably throw on a set of 33's I have in the shed at that point.

Where did you find the plastic trim pieces for the sides of the shell.  I have the exact same shell on my long bed right now and can't seem to find any RV/camper shell places around where I live that can order any type of parts.

 good to know!  I've got a similar shell, and I pulled the trim out because it was falling apart!

 nice work on the trailer!

Trailer is looking good!

I was just wondering though, why wait for a complete 4x4 axle to do the SOA?  Don't the axle shafts interchange with the 2wd stuff? If so, why not just flip the axle you have to make a SOA? Which will also raise the pinion in the 3rd member for additional clearance and will aid in minimizing damage to it since it can be used as a spare.  Then just swap the shafts if you're looking to make it a 6 lugger.  :dunno:  I don't know if you've considered this, just a thought.  :beerchug:

Not worth the hassle to flip it to be honest. Might as well put the other axle in if I am going to hassle with it. That axle is early 80's 2wd, a 7.5" diff vs 8", 55" width compared to the 58.5" width of the newer rear axle I will replace it with.

If you lived closer I would give you the 2wd axle, a set of toy rear springs & 3 5 lug wheels. You would be set :yesnod:
