It's clutch time. (got a few questions)
« on: Sep 21, 2008, 11:24:21 AM »
I am changing my clutch on my 89 toy with dual transfer cases. I changed a clutch by myself on my old jeep wrangler but never on a toyota. My question is, should i try to lower the complete transmission with dual transfer cases (looks heavy and long) or should I unbolt and remove the transfer cases first then the transmission.

My buddy just did this with his duals.  Unbolted the tranny from the motor...went through the cab with a couple ratchet straps to hold everything up and put the clutch in.  One person job but two people would make it easier.
Go 1-Ton from the start

I used a ratchet strap x2. although one is showing I did put a second one on. I had my tranny installed in under ten minutes.

I also installed Marlins 1200 clutch and flywheel.

heres is what my stocker looked like after wheeling at K-Rock with a single stock case.

The 1200 HD is great. I thought I would feel a difference at the pedal but I don't. Next time I will do the 1600 (just because). I wasn't so sure at the time. Sometimes my knee acts up (X-Navy) and wasn't sure if I could handle the extra pressure.
Very street friendly it's not grabby at all.
Money well spent in my book.

I thought about doing the same. But, knowing that I was going to put my truck thru hell. I opt for the clutch and flywheel. Dual cases takes the skinney pedal out some. It would be nice to have 4.7 gears in the rear case. but dual stockers work fine for me.
Good luck. THe HF tranny jack worked good. I did have to lift up on the tranny to move the little knobs to adjust the angle. other then that and the lame chain. straps work better. The tranny wont fall off the jack.
