high lift cam with stock size valves
« on: Sep 13, 2008, 10:06:17 PM »
so im building my 22r right now, i purchased an LCE mild stage 2 cam to go in it.  it has .515 valve lift, whereas stock is .410.  ive never heard of or seen taller valves for higher lift cams....im going to run new stock size valves.  it crossed my mind that the retainer could bottom out on the valve guide oil seal or something because this cam has so much more lift than a stock one.  i guess it will just be real close.... :dunno: does anyone know if the stock valves will work with a high lift cam?  maybe when i get the valve seats machined that will help a little too.

contact engnbldr@engnbldr.com he owns an awesome machine shop, and has a good experience base with the R toyota series engines.... he will at least give you technical advice...... have you tried giving LCE a call and see what they say?

I think the valves will be ok, but I'd worry about coil bind if you're using stock springs.

the coils will bind before that happens.

:yikes: .515 lift??   i hope it has a short duration or its gonna smack the piston unless you clearance the top of the piston,

the valves are always the same "height"
my cam is a .460 lift  and i had to clearance the pistons

due to the  lobe centers being offset and the short duration you'll probably be ok with piston clearance  but you need to double check that AND  valve spring bind and  valve stem seal clearance

true he knows alot about the R engine  BUT

how do you expect him to give an edjucated answer to a question about a cam he probably has no experience with since his  biggest cam is only .430 lift

thanks for the advice glen.  theres no way i would start that engine without tripple checking the clearance on everything.  im pretty sure i will have to have the pistons notched, but i am taking the head and block to the machine shop next week so it will get done then.  the shop is gonna check everything and make sure its all good.  they are gonna grind my valve seats, install valve guides, install valves and springs, mill the headgasket surface of either the block or head or both, hone the cylinder walls, balance the bottom end, and assemble the bottom end. ive tried to plan it out so everything works with everything else.  ive been slowly collecting parts for about a month.  i chose that cam carefully.  i didnt want a lot of duration.  i dont need to go up to 7000rpm or anything crazy.

i figured the valves were all the same height, thanks for answering that.

as far as california goes, ive got plates and its totally street legal.  :yumyum:

if you look in my build thread i put some info about the engine, but i pretty much already said it all here

one more thing i will throw out there...........the LCE dual valve springs i bought are good to .550 lift!  :beerchug:

once its assembled i am curious to the results,

OH,  i know what,  i'll install my desktop dyno later today  and run the numbers

btw  only take off enough of the head and block to smooth  the surfaces,  DONT MILL TOO MUCH

ya your stock springs will work. stock lift is .410 so .430 isnt too much more.

i cant wait to drive it.  all i can think about all day is what it will feel like to sink my foot into the petal.

i would love to see what your desktop dyno says!

ill be sure to tell the machinist not to take off too much of the head and block, but im sure he wouldnt anyways.

every year i go to reno, nevada with my dad for a week long car show called hot august nights.  this year when we went there was a dyno machine set up infront of the summit racing store.  they said they are gonna be there next year, and i drive my truck up there to wheel in the mountains.  next year im gonna throw my truck on the dyno just for fun to see what kind of horsepower and torque it runs. :driving: :burnout:

Even if you have too much taken off the head you could always run a thicker head gasket.  I found a guy on ebay who sells copper head gaskets for toyotas and will make them to any thickness you want!
