Rear springs on front ????
« on: Aug 07, 2004, 10:53:58 PM »
Hey i have a set of rear springs up front on my yota and i am wanting a lil more room and height too it and was wondering if anyone thinks if i add a 2 inch add a leaf too them if they will make them alot stiffer or if it will make much of a difference :headscratch: because it flexes great now but just want the lil extra height and tire fitment, am going coils on the rear of truck so i will have plenty of flex there, so a lil stiffer and less flex wouldent be bad in front, and they will prob loosen back up after i flex and work the truck some too i would think.
Any help or input you have is greatly appreciated.
thanks
adam

I think most guys use a couple leaves from another toyota rear pack
Common sense just isn't that common anymore

Prob just buy them and if i dont like them ill put em on my 94 4x4 tow rig so it wont squat as much when im toyota my trail rig.

On my rears up front, I removed both of the thick overload springs (some packs only have one) and mixed in three leaves each pack from the left over fronts.  Flex is incredible and it probably gave me about 3 inches of lift.  They still have a little positive arch which is good.

Brian's right. Just cut down a set of main leaves and secondary leaves out of another pack of rear toyota leaf springs and fit them into your pack. You'll be happy you did.

I used the top 3 leaves out of my stock rear pack, bottom 3 leaves out of a wagoneer, and then a cut down 3/4 ton chevy rear leave right in the middle and it is perfect.  just the right height anf lots of flex.

Hyena,
about how much lift did that set of springs give you, and do you think that possibly your shock is your limiting factor?

With the 2 inch lift shackle and the 2 inch crossmember, i think it gave me about 7-8 inches of total lift.  The springs by themselves probly about 3-4 inches i think.  I am pretty sure my shocks are limiting my travel.  My friends are running the same springs and they max out there rancho 5034 shocks, mine are only 5012 and i max them out.

Hey what size tires u running 33's or 35's.
have u tryed unhooking ur shocks and ramping it too see what it will do. myne will just about max my ramp with 35 boggers before a rear tire comes off.
hey could u post me or send me some pics of ur front mount and how is it holding up so far i like the design myne was 4x4 tubeing and its not strong enought and looks scary so im going too redo it.
thanks adam

Are you sure that they are 5034's?  When I origionally did the suspension on my 84 I used 5034's on the rear and dualed 5012's on the front.  They are the exact same shock other than the valving.  A 5012 is valved for dual spplication so it is softer than a normal shock, while a 5034 is valved for single application but used the same body and shaft as a 5012.

Hey white what do u think about the add a leaf idea?
Think it will hurt my flex much it flexs great now just need/ want more lift.
I figure it will be a lil stiff at 1st but will settle pretty quick and soften up somemore.
right now im running stock pack with the overload gone and a 1/2 ton chevy leaf in there 2.
Thanks
adam

Id go for it.  If the springs are too soft then it compromises droop as there is less force on the axle to go down.  If the springs are reasonably stiffened they will flex much better.

hmm maby put that set of 33 bfg all  terrains on it hmmm gona have too order it now u know of any place that sells them cheaper then 45 or around that because ive ordered some coils from performance before for my 95 runner  and shipping was way high.

after i made it.  basically a 2x6x31 1/2 inches i think.  1/4 wall.  With 1/4 inch thick end peices.  Used chevy spring hangers.

welded on.  1/8 inch thick peice in the middle for more strength.  It sat flat right after i did it so i added the cut down chevy leave right in the middle.  It sits perfect now.  And yes WT, my firends are running 5034's.  And they are longer then mine.  There shock mounts are up higher then mine.  Mine are cut down so i didn't have to cut the wheel well.
