OD light flashes
« on: Aug 20, 2008, 12:41:11 PM »
For the last few weeks my speedometer hasn't been working but when the tran. drops to first gear the speedometer would go crazy. We ran diagnostic test last week and two fault codes said it was the speed sensor, we went and got one and it did nothing, checked the wires from the sensor to the ECU and they were fine. I just don't know what it maybe now? Anybody know?

you checked the wires for continuity to the ecm? is the sensor sending a signal to the ecm? or did you just check it for cuts?

flashing overdrive lights usually indicate an internal problem with the tranny.... for that, there will be a diagnostic code... i dont know the procedure on it, for toyotas, but when i had a flashing overdrive light in my ford, i hooked it up to a scanner, and one of my shift solenoids was bad... i replaced it by dropping the pan and this special cip thing, and when i reset the light, it never returned again....

The codes I got were 42 for the OD off light and the check engine.

the light flashing means it triggers a code..... the code is then diagnosed as being some problem.....on our durango, i had a code of P0036 ... this code correlates to the computer seeing that the heated oxygen sensor, located on bank 1, sensor 2 -- was showing that the heater circuit wasn't functioning.....

the code isn't that it flashes a light, but directs an issue or part that isn't right

That is a fault code i got by putting a jumper wire in the diagnostic port. I got that off the internet as a self diagnostic. It would flash 4 times then about a 2 sec. pause and then flashed again 2 more times and then it would start over again.

so would that be a code 422? there is literature avilable about what a 442 means... it isnt the fact the light is on, but it will say what a 422 means... like a shift solenoid malfunction or what.... it will give you a baseline where to look... or the ecm is getting no information form a sensor --- which would mean sensor is bad or there is a wire problem.... etc

there are only 2 digit numbers on the site. The code 42s probable cause is vehicle speed sensor or check ECU. Im starting to think it may be the ecu

ok.... do you know that the ecm isnt receiving a signal from the VSS? how do you know the VSS isnt the culprit? have you checked the wires for contiuity? its very easy for a part to work, but the wires somewhere were pinched and its signal never makes it to the ecm
