K I have a little problem.i picked up a motor from an 84 4runner to put into my 85 regular cab. both carburated. The plan was to just swap the intake and exhuast from the 85 onto the 84 motor. well the intake went on fine but when i got to the exhaust i found that i had over looked something. I needed to use the 85 exhaust manifold to match up against the 85 intakes air injection. the 85 manifold wont bolt onto the 84 becasue of the different style bolt pattern. what i need to know is what your suggestions are for fixing this little predicament i stupidly got myself into. i didnt know if i should try to drill a whole in between the stock two on the 85's manifold so i could bolt it up or is it possible to go ahead and run the 84 manifold and tube that wraps around the back of the head and run that into this little box that is mounted above the starter and just block off one of the ports that on eof the tubes used to run to and just have all of the air go into one side instead of splitting it between the two. OR could i just bypass that box all together..I guess it would help to know what that box is called and what it does, if its something that the smog guy is going to look for or if its something the engine can do without. here are some pics. Any advive on how to fix this would be appretiated. Thanks James.

try to run the 84's exhaust system ( ALL of it ), maybe that'll fit. Dunno, just an idea.

KYOTA

If you need to keep the air injection for DEQ then swap the heads so you can bolt up your 85 manifold, if not then scrap all of the smog stuff and get a header.

Mike D

do you still have the origional  motor. if you do swap heads. I noticed that the head you have on there has the circle ports for the exhaust you would be better off with the pear shaped ports.

toyotaboy

you cant swap heads.. domes pistons in 84 and flat topped in 85

dont think i can thats the prob... the lines going around the head to the 85 intake are different

then just go with the 84's exhaust manifold.

I cant and thats the prob.. look at the two in the pics and they are different. the ports for the air injection come out differently

well now either scrap all that emissions crap and plug the holes or you could just us ethe intake from the 84 if you have it.

toyotaboy

nope... i used the 85 intake becasue i NEEDED the 85 air injection for it to smog. Why would i have changed it over from the 84 to the 85 if the 84 would have worked? :slap: :beerchug:

can you try to retrofit it?

toyotaboy

well im really not sure... i need to know whats going on with that little mystery box under there... it doesnt look like i can though. i cant use the 84 manifold and tube that goes around the head becasue i need it to be able to go onto that box. the box has two intake ports for the two tubes that come around on the 85 and if i try to run the 84 manifold and line then i will only have one tube to bolt on and i need two.. unless i knew what that box was for and if i could just block off one of the holes and just run the single tube from the 84 into one of them

if that made any scence whatsoever :smack:

KYOTA

According to the FSM its the valve that controls air coming from the pump.

toyotaboy

But in 85 they had no smog pump... i think i might try just bypassing it and running the 84 manifoldto a single tube around the head and then to where it goes to on the intake... unless someone has a legitament reason why taht would not be a good idea... will it affect smog?

I was looking at the schematic for an 84

toyotaboy

thanks for your help

Anyone know any detailes about if i can bypass it? if i just ran the hose from the exhaust manifold to where it connects into the intake manifold but not go through the box.. This truck has to pass smog..

when I put the header on my 94 engine there was no provision for the air tube so i cut the flange off the end of the tube and welded a plate over the hole and bolted it back on.  No issues so far.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??
