« on: Aug 11, 2008, 10:58:32 PM »
am not finding my answer , maybe its a dumb question, but if i take out my 85 rear axle and replace it with an 86 rear axle, would it be completly bolt on and no modifications to the springs and u-bolts, perches, etc. THanks. also would my inner 85 axles, and 3rd member would fit right in with no issues or am i wrong?? thanks.

the shocks, and sping perches will bolt in place with no issue....

your ebrake cable will be short, and you will need to address that, i have seen some people space it over with an extra clevis pin (fordh8r runs this setup)

the inner axles from the 85 will not work, they will be too short, you must use 86+ inner axles

didn't the IFS rear  have the shocks mount 1 forward one rear? I don't remember correctly. I personally cut the perches and rotated the housing to eliminate any DL vibration.

Yes that is correct,......they are set up that way to help control axle wrap

thanks for the help guys, the rear shock setup looks the same to me as what i have now on my 85'.
I was just wondering about this, because i can i get the 86 rear axle housing for 20$ that has been trussed already.
is it a benifit to be 3'' wider?? is it worth it, thanks;., i also heard that the ones off a 4runner are 58" 1/2 than the pickup ones which are just 58''

Youll need the spring plates to match the axle your using if doing this swap and keeping the stock shock mounting. The axle tubes on the narrow/early rear axles are smaller diameter tube, than the later/wide rears. The spring plates, which include the shock mounts are formed slightly different for each axle.

here's a pic of what you should get. i just installed a 1990's wider axel on my 79.  the shock mounts are completely diffront on a 79-83 truck. but if your 1985 shocks mounts are already like these, it should be easy. the other way to go is to install a ubolt flip kit and fab new shock mounts.

When I swapped my 88 rear axle into my 85, I used the 88 e-brake cable so I didn't have to mess with the 85 cable, I used the 88 axle plate deals ("B" in the above picture) and had some new u-bolts made because mine were so rusted on I had to cut them off. I was real easy, hardest part is bleeding the brakes because it can take a while. It took me maybe an hour to swap mine in, probably less.

i would rather have a little axle wrap than have my shocks setup that way. they dont prevent axle wrap at all, they just kind of slow it down.  why would you want your bushings to bind when you could just run them like this /\ ?   thats just my opinion though :hammerhead:

If you mount them right in the front/back configration they will not bind. They also work better and depending on the shock help with axle wrap.
