I am posting this question for a friend that owns an 88 Suzuki Samurai...he is currently stock and would like to lift it to fit 31's (i think he has 28's right now) he was thinking of buying the Spidertrax 4.5 in liftkit for 250...We would like know how the lift is achieved if it uses stock leafs....either by lift blocks or whatever other method....and the other part of the question is that instead of buying that liftkit he would buy some leafs from a toyota and put them on....how much lift would be aquired and what mods would he have to do...like extended brake lines and such....he is traying to make it up to 31's with very little money...so any advice that would save him money would be appreciated   :beerchug:

I would think just a spring over lift would get him the clearance he needs.  Just have to buy u-bolts, plates, perches, brake lines,  shocks, maybe have driveline issues, don't know about steering.  It's just an idea for you guys.

greengo

its prolly a spring over set up. thats the only way you could use the stock springs and get 4.5" lift. with that he should be able to fit 33"s with some trimming and the right offset wheel. heres a pic of my friends sammi, spring over, stock sammi rear springs in the front and stock Jeep YJ front springs in the rear, sittining on 33x13.50 15's with 2"bs wheels.

I am thinking greengo is right.  It might be the spring over kit that your friend is looking at.

i built an 87 Zuk that was purty sweet, no pics to show as of now. It took me 2 yrs start to finish. If youre bud wants 31's.........the CHEAPEST way is a springover and driveshaft spacers. If he wants power and articulation, then he needs the 4.16-1 t case. Springs use stock zuk rears up front and front CJs on the rear. Price only goes up from there. For parts check with Brent at Trailtough.com.....tell him James Mcada referred ya. He has the same rep in the zuk world as does Marlin in yota world.

Skinny_Pedal

it was either last month or the month before that petersons did a thing called the "cheap truck challenge". it was with a sami and they sprung it over. have your buddy check that out

Do you guys think its worth buying the kit or just doing something ourselves?

I've met all the guys from spidertrax cause their shop is in my hometown about a half hour away from here. I would tell your friend to buy the kit, they make great stuff, and their customer service is marlin quality.
Common sense just isn't that common anymore

SWAMPER

Alright thanks guys...So the spidertrax kit plus shocks is all we would need to fit 31's right?

Well I think I may just go with the spidertrax kit because I got an answer back from the ppl at Spidertrax and they told me that I could just bolt the kit on and drive away...they told me that Upper shock mounts and longer shocks would help

wait a minute. if your doing a spring over u are going to have to weld on the new spring perches. the rest would be a bolt on though

WHITE_TRASH

Nah even that is bolt on now.  The new perches have long "legs" that rest on the old perches and the housing.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Well that just helps for easy placement for when you go to weld them  right WT

Why not shop and try Brent at trailtough.com, he never steered me wrong and sold me quality parts with above board quality service. Over 2 yrs of buildin my zuk I spent alot of time  on the phone with him, none of which seemed to be a problem. Nothing against SpiderTrax. Before you or your buddy commits check all the options. If ya can weld go to your local trailer shop and buy spring pads--- bout 8.00$ for all 4 corners , 2" flat bar ---------maybe 20.00 for a 20'er. There are alot of po boy options for a basic springover.

SWAMPER

Ill tell my friend about trailtought  ....the thing is that he is not very finacialy stable and dosent know a lot about off-roading...he just started

If you or your buddy know how to weld and have access to a welder, you can do a spring over in your own garage. You can buy spring perches for about $20 for all four.I would recomend using the stock zuk springs, they articulate better than lift springs, when they're over the axle. That will give him about 3 1/2 to 4 inches of lift, with good articulation, and enough room to fit 31s.As far as steering, you guys can fab up an "S-link"using thicker material than your existing drag link, allthough i have seen guys bend up their stock one, just make sure you reinforce it at the bends. As for the shocks,he can either relocate his lower shock mounts,or buy longer shocks. He'll have to buy longer brake lines, which are not that expensive, otherwise his original ones will serve as limiting straps.I would also recomend building some small trac bars for the rear to prevent axle wrap.Last but not least, his drive shafts. There's a couple of options,he can either get the spacers that spidertrax offers(and I'm not sure if anyone else has them),or he can have his extended, wich I imagine might be a bit more costy, but I'm not sure.   Amen.
