I have an 84 22r 5 speed. Which is a G52.  Eventually I will have to rebuilt it.  I know marlin will automaticly upgrade it to a G54.  I have heard that a W56 is stronger.  My question is, is it stronger and what is the modification to install. or will it just bolt right on.

Hey DK,

Transmission: I just upgraded my 84 G52 to a W56... fits perfect with no modifications needed (bolts right up).   I upgraded my clutch with Marlin's Super Heavy Duty clutch at the same time with a .026 step on the flywheel. As far as strongness, there is a post around here that has the specs on durability. G52 is the weakest (G54 is a step up), W56 in the middle, and the turbo R150/R151 as the stongest. Marlin will also do a HD Transmission for the W56.

TCase:You will need to get a top-shifting TCase or convert your forward shifting tcase!!! And... You will also need to cut the floorboard about 4" back from the original position of the TCase. I used a piece of sheetmetal from Home Depot ($5) to cover the cut out area of the transmission and TCase.

Do a search on "W56 G52" and it will have atleast 4 pages of info for yah.

Unless you are going to race this thing or put some serious horse power behind it the upgrade G52 will do just fine for your dailey driving and wheelin needs

Unless the tires ever come more than a foot off the ground!  Ive got a g52 that chunked its reverse idler when it was jumped.  I talked to Marlin about it and as soon as I described the issue he mentioned it getting jumped.  That and the trans has no 1st or 2nd anymore but thats another story.  Just get a w56 and run with it.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??
