Chris    I've noticed with mine, that with the 5.29's I can be in fourth gear at 55mph and still get that fifteen or more up those hills. I guess what Im trying to say is that, you had that motor working hard, where as the 5VZ would have to. So try slowing down a bit you freekin speed freak. :shhh:

OK, lets put this in my statement from yesterday....

In my 1981 with a 22r with 250K on it wtih 5.29s and 37s I was able to pull 60-65 the entire way on that same hill and get 16mpg....Thats at full throttle

In my 1986 4runner with a 22re with 4.10s and 37s I was able to pull about 60-65 the entire way and get 15-18mpg... And thats at about 3/4 throttle

RIP Kyota.... you are the man

So a little info here that may actually be useful to people...

I just cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor on my 02 taco with a 3rz and it has SOOOOO much more power. Ive looked at the sensor before to see if it was dirty but it didnt look dirty. I kept getting a check engine light for NO reason and it said my o2 sensors but both of mine were new so i was like wtf. so recently i got the check engine light scanned again and to troubleshoot the light it said to clean the AFM. I didnt have anything poppin off tonight so i went out and cleaned it and my air filter and sure enough, no light AND the truck hauls ass now.

Its seriously almost comparable to my old 3.4 now. Ridiculous....

For the entire time of me owning my truck till now I hated the 3rz but now after doing that, its a pretty good motor.

Id still rather have the 3.4 though

Neither did I. You should drive it now to feel the power. Its ridiculous. It pulls soooo hard. The speedo climbs to 85 with ease and still keeps pulling. I was going 80 UP to Cohasset, uphill and in 5th!

Great posting. I personally have a 85 x-cab with a 3rz. It scoots when you punch it. Not a hot rod or race car but moves pretty good. Depending on how heavy you are makes the biggest difference. BigMike has a faster 3rz than most and his in my opinion hauls ass, but he is super light. So, if you heavy..3.4 and if your light 2.7.

So what is considered heavy/light?

My guess would be:

A "Light" truck would be something like Mikes: full bodied pick up, limited armor (just 2 bumpers and sliders), smaller tire size, aluminum or steel wheels, etc...

A "Heavy" truck would be something like a 4runner, with full armor (bumpers, sliders, full exo or internal cage), big tires, beadlocks, etc...

Plus I am assuming most of these statements being made about power on the 2.7 vs the 3.4 are based on an empty truck that isn't loaded with passengers or gear.

But I haven't driven either engine in anything other than a stock Tacoma, thats just my guess on the vaguest way to estimate if your truck is considered "heavy" or "light"

Recently finished my 01 Tacoma with the 3.4. Has a diamond front, Elockers, Taco box & FROR SAS hangers. I haven't built a front bumper & added my winch yet but as it sits with stock bumpers, Total weight is 4150 & the front weighs around 2600. Not an engine conversion, but thought someone might like to hear the numbers. I might move the rear axle forward for a little better front-back balance.

I am in the process of swapping a 2002 3rz into my 87 turbo truck and am going to have it weighed. But i dont get where everyone says 3rz are light because my 2002 3rz with all accessories with a flywheel and torque converter still bolted to it sitting on a pallet weighed 610 lbs. I would imagine the pallet weighed 60lbs and torque converter and flywheel together weighed amother 40lbs. 510 lbs is mot my idea of a light motor. And my idea of a light rig would be 3,000lbs to 3500lbs and above 4,000 would be heavy. But those are just my thoughts. I hope my ride weighs no more than 3500 ready to wheel. :crossed:

Well, that's what i would say too, but I was wanting something more concrete. You didn't happen to weigh the 22RE did you? I would like to hear what your truck actually weighs when you weigh it.
