Steering box?
« on: Jul 22, 2008, 06:48:08 PM »
So, last sat.  I got to spend a lot of time with the 89. The p.o. said the power steering pump was bad so I swapped it out (instead of making sure it was bad :shake:) with another pump. Anyways after a couple of hours I got the new one on and bled and when I turn left then turn right it will get hard for a second then is fine and will turns great. I haven't got around to installing the hydro stuff yet so the box wasn't taken apart. could the problem lie in the box somewhere? It's almost ready for the road and wheelin but don't wanna take it out with it doing this. Any ideas? FYI, it an 89 with 22re, 40 in Iroks. Sas'd.

Might still have air in it, I just put ps in my truck and it too had a point where the steering got hard and then continued. I just kept turning the steering until it burped the air out.

It's not a quick process, I spent a good 45 min. rocking the steering lock to lock. Fluid will get full of little bubbles (foamy) in the reservoir as the air is burped out.

Do not forget to bleed the steering box.

As long as he kept the fluid in the box he should have been OK. I primed my box and pump as I installed them and they were bone dry before that. Still got air out of them both in the beginning but as long as they're primed it will eventually work the air out.

You know what, I did notice a bleeder screw on this box. My 86 box didn't have one. :headscratch:

What is your point with this post? In one sentence, you say he will be OK, and then you turn around and say you got air out. You really confused me, sort of like Hillary on some of the issues.

If you put a new component into any hydraulic system, you need to bleed the whole system. Any time that any air is induced into the system, the pump will mix it up and you will not only get the froth but billions of tiny air bubbles it the fluid that will spread throughout the system. Why wait, bleed the box so the air does not have to work its way back up to the reservoir causeing more bubbles.

He only replaced the pump not the box. The box should still have fluid in it if he didn't let it run out, I just last week put in a complete system from start to finish and only primed the system, beyond that the pump did the rest pushing all the air out just by turning the steering wheel.
