cross pin movement with an aussie locker.
« on: Jul 17, 2008, 06:40:04 AM »
So i finally got around to installing my aussie locker. I checked everything the instructions asked, put everything mack in the same order,Back lash is fine etc. With the locker in my axle housing, axles in and tires on i notice it seemed i had a huge amount of backlash, So i took it all apart and it was fine. still wondering why it did this a grabbed a short side inner and plugged it into one side of the diff and grabbed it with channel locks to simulate the weight of a tire. The locker seems to move inside the carrier until it hits the cross pin. Is this movement normal for a locker.when it was in the housing with the axles i could rotate the pinion about 1/8 or so rotation before the wheel began to spin.

SO basically I'm asking if lockers like an aussie have play between themselves and the cross pin, translating into more pinion movement before a tire rotates.

 :headscratch:

My tire rotates about 4" measured on the OD of the tire with proper backlash.

I can't check to see how much a tire rotates because i pulled it back out, if you could how far you can your rear drive shaft with trans in neutaral that would help. I've been trying to get ahold of aussie locker themselves but right now they just have wimmins there and they don't know.

EDIT: just got off the phone with aussielocker and they said that it was the normal operation of the locker.
so for anybody who searches and finds this thread EXTRA MOVEMENT IS NORMAL. The feeleing of extra backlash is normal it is the locker rotating into contact with the crosss pin.
