Here's somthing strange if someone can help
« on: Jul 10, 2008, 10:39:23 PM »
OK people question I'm looking at getting a (oh how I hate to say this :shudder:) a 1986 Jeep wrangler :reg: i know why a Jeep :dunno: but I'm gonna put in a ford 302 a W56-C trans a the gear drive T-case. I'm also gonna flip the diff by swapping axle tubes and a spring over axle. so I'm having a few problems, first does any one know where to get a 302-W56 adapter, and i have no clue how to pull the axle tubes any one know?

302 to toy trans bellhousing NWOR, I do believe to pull the tubes you have to drill out the plug welds on the center section and press them out.

No wrangler till 87, 86 would be a cj7 and you dont' want the jeep axles. Use Toy axles or a d44 out of a chevy. Much easier to cut and sleave the tube than push them out of the center section. If you do it you need a big press and a lot of heat.

good luck

Jeep
W56-C trans
I think Jeep used Toyota trannys in some model years. My buddy ordered some Jeep tranny parts & the parts had Toyota part #'s on them  :dunno:

AX 4, AX5 and AX15 were all built by Asian just like the Toyota trans. All have sister toyota trans counterparts. There are some differneces like bell housing and input/output shafts but bsicly the same trans.

If he has an older Wrangler Pre 91 he probly has a Peugot trans that is not worth messing with. If he really has an 86 it is a cj7 and I dont' remember the stock trans t19 maybe.

For teh 302 to toy stuff call Scott @ Rockstomper.com he has done it before I think.

Wagoneer 44's are about the easiest swap into a yj/cj ever.  There is no way I'd mess with swapping tubes on a 30.  Its a turd even when polished to a shine...

Oh and if it is driver drop it certainly isn't a cj, yj's were the first to go driver drop front ends...
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

OK OK I just did some pricing and heres what I might do, I'm still gonna do the 302 and W56-C and gear drive case. now here's where I've hit a snag eather buy a lefty drop adapter from inch worm and 4.7:1 gears from marlin total cost about $1200 OR put some TOYOTA axles under it and put a detroit locker in the rear for now (later on I would put a spool or ARB or E-locker in the rear and move the detroit to the front) I'm leaning towards the yota axles my only question is will I have to move the springs in or out. anyone know?
