i'm not sure, all i know at this point is that it is the factory tranny in a '81 starlet and that it's a 5 speed manual....how or where would he find out what series it is?

ITs probably a k-50.....I have no idea how you would identify it though....its hard to find ANY info on these things

K50
Oil capacity:4.2 lmp pints(2.45L)

Synchromesh on all Forward Gears

Ratios:

First Gear: 3.789:1
Second Gear: 2.220:1
Third Gear: 1.435:1
Fourth Gear: 1.000:1
Fifth Gear: 0.865:1
Reverse gear: 4.316:1
Applications:

Most 5-speed RWD Tercel, Starlets and Corollas with K-series engines.
1986 Corolla with 3A-U and 4A-U engines.
KM20 series LiteAces were fitted with K50 transmissions to 4K and 5K engines as an option, and to the 7K as standard.

RIP KYOTA

from the internet research that i've done, it should be a kp60 series starlet and had a 4K-C 1.3 liter engine in '81-82

It's a K50 (check the aluminum VIN tag in the engine bay to be sure).  Also found in K-series Corollas but good luck finding one of them - most were 2TC or 3TC powered.  Have your friend jump over to www.toyota3tc.com and search around, see if anybody building a Starlet has a K50 they want to get rid of.  Nobody over there uses them.  They swap the engines out for 3TCs and use at least a T50, often a W50 or W58 if they are pushing big power (and some of them are).
