only one retarded here is you

BTDC  is ADVANCED

cam timing is NEVER set to anything besides 0

:gap:

thanks guys! What engine temps do most of you see with your 22r motors?  Im not looking for "my factory gauge reads half way"  Real temps from after market gauges, cause we all know how well toyota gauges work  :shake:

well most aftermarkets are 185-195* for thermostats, the stock OEM Toyota thermostats are 180*
now a cooloer engine performs much better and efficient, some people go a little hotter for winter, if their heater isnt as hot as they would like.

so im going to say 180* is warm idling temp.
as far as i understand from Toyota

to a point, running a lower temp thermostat will not allow the engine to get warm enough and will kill the heater (cold heat) its a tossup to it runs better or not cooler.... because at cooler temperatures, it is supposed to be able to be advanced more without ping supposedly equalling more power, if so tuned....

i have a thread recently about using a higher pressure radiator cap and a lower temp thermostat.... look into that thread

A hotter engine burns the fuel more completely and efficietnlty   I believe the current factory toy thermostats are 192 degree  :dunno:

A quick and cheapo way to get more airflow is to buy two air filters silicone them together then get a long enough bolt for the air cleaner lid.  I saw a noticable improvement in economy and performance.

or just buy the bigger filter to begin with and save the cost of silicone....

my stock carburetor was a piece of :pokinit:, so i got a weber 38 and eliminated ALL of the smog stuff and it runs AMAZING. but now it wont smog of course, good thing i dont care.  i did choose to run a cat on my full exhaust system, partially to keep it quieter and also just so it doesnt stink.  :beerchug:

I have an LCE header into 2.25 exhaust, flowmaster 50 series muffler and no cat. It smells like a 4 stroke motocross dirtbike! It doesn't stink, I actually like the smell of it, but to each his own.

I will go Thorley Tri-Y, Magnaflow Cat, Magnaflow Turbo 6" oval with a short turn down after the axle. all 2.25 after the header. i dont like flowmasters

mine has that tinny sound until it fills with the water my engine makes. It has been doing the tinny sound less and less, so maybe it is getting all carboned up and not vibrating as much. :dunno: The sound has improved since the exhaust was done around last Christmas.

Open header is OMG loud, but it sounds SICK

that would make sense... makes you wonder... is the material that magna and flow use.. that much different that magna doesnt have the tinny... heck i wonder what a borla would sound like.

Magnaflow's straight through mufflers are the best, IMO, provided you keep the pipe to 2 or 2 1/4.  It's a bit louder, but still very quiet.  A proper muffler should work like a firearm silencer/use baffles and dispersion and not make the exhaust run through a maze of chambers.

http://www.magnaflow.com/05news/magazine/05sportcpg02.asp
Some info.  Of course, not all of their mufflers are like this.  Offsets are not optimal, but it's more of a sound difference than anything else.

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=7547
I have this on my 4Runner.  Very nice.  This is more money but appears to be the best overall design.  Yeah, it's chrome.  The shop had this for $20 more and said it would sound better.  The chrome will rust soon enough.

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=7631
This would also work fine I bet for a LOT less money.  I honestly doubt if a 22R or 22RE has enough power to even need 2.25 inch(2 inch would likely work just as well for a DD), though I do like the sound of straight through - like exactly half of a V8. :)

Their cats also are very nice.  Both makes for a very nice non-tinny sound.  Though, yeah - it's obviously a small 4 and not a V8.  It's NOT going to ever sound like a Chevy 350.   :nope:

http://www.car-sound.com/02product/shopdisplayproducts.asp?pulldown=cs
Have to weld a bit but this is about 2/3 the cost of a direct fit one. $160 vs $260.  That's about half what the OEM cat costs.

The two together are about $250 if you shop around.  Add some pipe and  :flamer: and enjoy.
