Remember that when you adjust the cold/fast idle speed, the engine is warmed up.........

When cold it won't be that high.

here is some good info i found in searching for my issue about a missing carb bolt.... i kinda don't agree with the way to set the cold idle though, his writeup says do it cold, but the FSM clearly states to do it @ operating temperature.... maybe i just interpreted it wrong....

So factory timing is 8* at idle (under 900rpm). I always thought it was suppose to be 0* at idle because its an interference motor.

It is, but that has nothing to do with ignition timing.........

Correct, the interference part comes into play when you screw up on your mechanical timing AKA the timing chain. If you screw that up, you screw up your engine. Ignition timing has nothing to do with it, as stated above. Ignition timing is for IGNITION or in other words, when the spark is delivered to the cylinder.

yes!

see you time the crank and cam shaft at 0* and then you retard it 3-8* BTDC with the distributer.

so timing should be retarded 3-8 degrees or advanced 3-8 degrees? I have a 22r and run it at 0* at an idle of 700rpm with the vaccume advance plugged.  Should i advance it until it pings and then back off a little to obtain the most power? or do these motors run better slightly retarded?  I seem to have decent power now and just passed cali smog with no problems.  I also just rebuilt the top end with new head and rolled in new bearings on the main so i know the motor is sound.  I havent advanced it because my motor runs kind of warm as is.  Im running a v6 3 core radiator and the toyota dual stage 190* thermostat. I also have a brand new fan clutch and water pump, i run about 190-195* around town and about 200-210* on the freeway at 70mph at 3k RPM.  I have 35's and 4.88s.

well stock is 5* BTDC which is retarded IIRC, so retard it 3* more for a total of 8* BTDC. that should be perfect.
if it pings.... back it off a bit.

thanks guys! What engine temps do most of you see with your 22r motors?  Im not looking for "my factory gauge reads half way"  Real temps from after market gauges, cause we all know how well toyota gauges work  :shake:
