22R Cheap Tweaks & Info
« on: Jun 02, 2008, 03:40:07 AM »
So i'd like to know from all you guys who have first hand experience with 22Rs
I dont want to change my carburetor, from what i hear... these Aisins are better then Weber's anyways if tuned right.

what can i do to my stock 85 22R to get a little more UMPH out of the lil ticker.

before you say it..... Im not looking for the Cam, Header, etc.... kind of answers.

more of the " move this vacuum line, plug this one..... change this setting on the carb.... etc"

ALL the little mods you can think of, SHOOT 'em at me.

if it cost more then a stock yota alty.... dont suggest it. LOL

Thanks guys,
HO

2 1/4" exhaust after the catalytic converter.

Turbo Muffler.

And when the cat needs replaced, go with a 2 1/4" universal.

How about this for an idea...

One of the ways to increase power is to advance the timing and it should improve fuel encomony I believe.  The obvious problem is pinging.  Choose the grade of fuel you want to run and set the timing to stock setting and then advance the timing until it starts to ping and back off a bit.  Higher octane fuels resist pinging so depending on how much you drive it may not impact your fuel cost much at all since it's less than a $5 difference for a full tank.

Also, if the engine temperature is cooler I believe you can advance the timing a bit more before it starts to ping.  A lower temp thermostat might be an options and a product like Purple Ice or Redline Watterwetter might lower the temperature a bit.

I'm working on tuning mine back to regular grade fuel and I'll be putting some Waterwetter in in the next couple of days to see what it does, if anything.

Just an idea...

Thorley header, cat, 2 1/4 exhaust, straight-through muffler...

Massive improvement in power.  I can pass people on a 5% grade in 5th.(ie - pulls up a 5% grade now at 70mph+)  Gobs of power at low rpms as well, and engine cleanly revs up to 5K.   Lost 2mpg highway though - but I suspect that's because I'm driving 70-75 on the freeway instead of barely making 65...    :gap:   Nice to keep up with traffic for a change.

ie - the exhaust is in the plan/budget you said...  but without a proper header, it's largely wasted.

all very good ideas.

the exhaust system will be my first major upgrade then a cam.

blackdiamond, let me know how that goes for you.. im interested in how it performs for you.

22*R* i thought you had EFI?

my sister's 87 is EFI and my 4Runner is Carbureted.

then after the engine is performing to my liking, next major thing will be gears, lift, high steer, 37s
for now, im sticking the axles on longer shackles, to sit it up and fit my 33s i got.

First post you said no cam and no header... guess what you want? Better exhaust (usually includes a header) and a cam!

you better not be using blocks in the front

i normally get ngk plugs and wires.

i modified a weber air filter to fit.. it works great because my stock aircleaner basically sucked air right above the header.

if you want a hotter plug, run the next hotter NGK plug, I believe the lower the number, the hotter the plug (for NGK plugs that is) so stock is what? a ***5** or something to that effect? So get a ***4**

id like to run an oval filter and lid assembly, does anyone besides K&N sell them?
not only would it match the shape of the valve over... it would keep it from being over the VC, and i could remove it for valve work and not take it off (unless i really need to) and it will look more pleasing to me and be less restrictive.

if im wrong on any of that, oh well.
i want that stock setup, GONE lol

ive heard they try and do that.
but the guys here dont try and sell you either or.
what we say pretty much goes, as a customer :gap:

Sounds like the NGK V-Power's are my plug of choice.

Is 22RE stock timing 5 degrees and you recommend 8 degrees that is a 3 degree difference.

It appears that you also recommend 3 degrees advanced from stock for a 22R, but you're not sure what the stock setting?

my 84 22r underhood sticker says 5* timing @ no more than 950 rpm with vacuum lines plugged..... also says cold idle should be 2600 rpm

I have not even driven the 4Runner since I put WaterWetter in the radiator, but I was just reading the Technical White Paper on the website and noticed the following:

"COOLANT EFFECTS ON PERFORMANCE
Under moderate load conditions, each percent glycol
raises cylinder head temperatures by 1°F. 50% glycol
raises head temperatures by 45°F. This increase in
temperature will raise the octane required for trace
knock levels by typically 3.5 octane numbers. A car
equipped with a knock sensor will retard the timing to
compensate for the increase in octane requirement
by approximately 5°, which will reduce the maximum
brake torque by about 2.1%. Racing vehicles not
equipped with knock sensors can advance timing for
increased torque."

It might actually make a difference.  In any case, it was interesting info.

Is 22RE stock timing 5 degrees and you recommend 8 degrees that is a 3 degree difference.

It appears that you also recommend 3 degrees advanced from stock for a 22R, but you're not sure what the stock setting?

exactly..........
