so i have an 89 toyota extendedcab with the 3.0. I,m not sure what i should do. i dont have much for cash, that i can spend on the truck but i have a little every month. Im not sure if i should SAS, put an IFS lift on it or sell it and buy a truck with a solid axle under it? I dont do much wheeling, but i want to start getting more serious, also its my DD.

id do one of these:

1: id look for an older truck with a solid axle already.
2 sell yours an buy a rig thats already built up a bit.
3. throw a body lift on if moneys tight and throw on a little bigger set of tires and go wheeling.

I say go wheeling and have fun... Save your money for that 3.0 and hope it is not like rest of them.

yeah i have about $1000 and i can fab, but i got the truck for free. im thinking in the lines of just selling it and buying a 79-85 truck. so if anyone knows of one that is in oregon let me know! and yes it is like all the rest and it has 80,000 miles on it...

NorCalToy

what does this truck look like? clean? or super beat down already?

Wheel it.  Break it.  *Then* SAS it.

You can easily fit 31s on a stock suspension and with good skills, you can actually get over most anything short of the Rubicon.

I would say wheel it. Find out what it is capable of, what you're capable of and get to "know" the truck. As your capabilities (or your nads) grow, you can mod the truck to keep up. Easier this way (more time to save the $$$$ between mods), and you will be the better wheeler for the extra time.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

If you buy a bone stock 79-85 it is going to cost, you almost as much to get it "Trail Ready" as it is to do an SAS on a later model IFS rig.

To all of you 3.0 haters, I have been wheeling one for twelve years with out a problem. What I have to say to you is "Bring It On". A Sample of how I wheel.

today, i found an axle for $100 off of an 85, or he is willing to sell me the whole truck for $500. but my 89 is in amazing shape for the year. there is one dent, and thats on the passenger door where i hit a tree. so im thinking im just going to drive it as is till next month, but in the mean time i will start to get parts rounded up and start making the front hanger to do a SAS. becuase as OOPS said it would cost about the same to set up another truck or SAS my truck.

Plekto

$500 might buy a whole lot of spare parts, though...

NorCalToy

whats wrong/missing on the 85?

$500 for a full truck isn't a bad deal, you can use what you need, and part out the rest, get your $500 back, or at least some of it.

I'm for keeping the truck, and building it as time and $$ allows.

yeah the 85 is missing the bed and some interior parts like door panels, and the motor needs rebuilt, but myself and my friend tony can rebuild a 22r in two days, like we did with my 86 that i sold. but im thinking that i might just buy it and cutting the hanger of and swaping the rear spings to the front and running longer shackels in the rear. then taking the transfercase out and mabey run duals.? the axel just got rebuilt also, so thats a plus. so i could just use it as a donor truck. plus i like the looks of the 3rd gens SAS. any one know where i can get high steer for cheep?
