5 speed tranny issue
« on: May 20, 2008, 08:26:12 PM »
:inthedark: I've done some searching and got everything but what I need. I just lost the headgasket on the way to Moab. (no vacation in Moab, just the garage) finally got it running, got 35 miles on the new top end, and 2nd gear started to grind going into gear. Once in a while 4th will as-well, just not as bad. Now I have the tranny in 1st gear driving under a load, or steady driving in 1st runs ok, when I start to decelerate (in 1st) the tranny sounds like its going to EXPLODE!!! WTF!!! Does anyone have any suggestions???? This really sucks! the tranny is supposed to have been rebuilt (with the motor) about 35k ago. It just started in a heartbeat, no warning at all. The clutch works good, and 3rd gear and 5th are good. (so far)...  :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:

The truck is an 1985 4Runner with the 22RE and the stock 5 spd trans. I'm using Mobil one 75-90 syn (changed about 2 months ago)
Thanks in advance for the help..  :crossed:

If someone knows a better place to ask this, please let me know! :)

could it be an issue not tranny? like a out of phase driveshaft, or a bad third member or tcase?

With the driveshafts not being removed at all...No. How will the Diff, or Transfer case have an issue when it's only the 5 spd making the noise???  ::) :shake:

it is a downline component... sound cant always be heard from a certain spot when you are in a certain spot... same way as you aren't supposed to be able to tell where a subwoofer is....

hey, i was jsut trying to help you and give you ideas, you want to "  ::) :shake: " @ me... then you aren't worth my time

Thanks anyways. I'm still just a little pissed off. My point is the noise is only in the trans. and can be felt in the shifter. Not in either of the transfer cases, and the noise only ihappens in first gear deceleration....

could be the input shaft bearing, i have a friend with the same problem and hes had it for a good year. only reeally does it in neutral while at highway speeds or letting off the gas while in gear. did you jut recently lift your vehicle becasue that can also affect the wear and tear iv heard and seen friends have no problem till they throw a 5 in marlin lift and with the new drive line angle their old transfer case cant handle it and pretty much goes to crap. just an idea

Thanks for the input..I spoke to one of Marlins guys and he told me to try a few things..One of which is try a different oil. I have Syn. in it. So I got Valvoline 75-90. 1/2 the price of Moble1...:) after driving it for a few minutes to get the oil splashed around...the noise is gone! I've been beeting the 1st and 2nd gear trying to get it to make noise and I can't...   I don't know if this is just a band-aid, or a fix. But for now I'm not buying a trans!!! (the wife is very happy!!) :) Thanks to all who have added input!
