85 4-runner on a budget

I have a stock 85 4-runner EFI, and will be using it for a trail rig and daily driver. I will be using it for mainly wooded trails and hill climbing.  The only not stock is the brakes and tires. I would like to know what mods will give me the most bang for the buck.  I only have about $1000.00 to spend on it right know.  Any suggestions would be great...  I know this site is more for the hardcore offroader, But around here there is no rock.  The terrain is mainly hills through woods, mud, and hardpack dirt.   :shake_head:  I was thinking locker, lift, and tires. Has any used a No-slip by power trax?

I have the same-85 4runner efi.  Goes pretty much everywhere as is with street tires.  All I have done so far is straight piped the cat and a cone filter to replace the air box.  My other rigs are way more built than this.  I would suggest maybe a locker for the rear and some decent tires and go have fun.  Maybe a shackle lift or body lift-or both-they're real cheap.  You'll find more parts and mods you'll want to make as time moves on.  Good luck!

I would get a aussi locker for the front.they seem to be a good way to go and better then the loc-right not to mention 200bucks to boot..Lock the back with the same if your not going to hard core,,then out fit your rig with a good lift kit from marlin or all-pro wich I think is the same thing but not sure..Thats how I would start..

Lock the rear first  :thumbs: and even though your not hardcore right now your gonna get bit by the bug and it will be all over with. So do it right the first time with the locker and go detriot, $450 but no need to upgrade later cause you limited slip is SLIPPING, and then an ausie up front.

thanks for the info on the aussie locker.  I have not heard of this locker before.  I read the review on pirates BB. Just what I was looking for!  What are my options for a lift?  Allpro, Procomp, or Marlin? How long of a wait will it be for the marlin springs.... I heard he has great customer service.

I would stay away from the ProComps for sure just cause they are a massed produced spring. Cheapes would probably be waggys up front and cheives in the rear

Dont waste your time on limited slip. go full locker in the rear. dont forget gears while your in there. some tires and some springs. And most of all have fun.........   :beerchug: for the tires believe it or not Walmart.com has the best price on MT/Rs. No tax and they'll ship it to your closets walmart for free and the mount and balance is cheap..

Just ordered a aussie locker for the rear.  I am looking for some more lift options.  What tires do guys run for woods and hillclimbing??  I am looking at boggers or swamper sx... 33's or 35's

I have run nothing but 38x12.5 tsl's for the last few years.  The next tire I buy will probobly be the same size but in an sx.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Although a little steep, I would go x-over steering. I think there is a cheaper non-hysteer setup. I've seen a quite a few stock broken horseshoe steering arms that will leave you stranded. Just my  :twocents:

after I get my lift, locker, and tires.  I will have to wait a little while to save the $$$ for a marlin      hy-steer crossover set up.  I have heard this is the way to go to eliminate bump steer and broken steering parts.  thanks for the help

Just got the aussie installed...It's great :thumbs:  I see a locker up front in the future. Easy to install and only had to wait 1 week for the big brown truck to leave it on the door step. I went places on a muddy trail that I could not get up when it was dry. My next delievery will be a 2" body lift and a 1" lift bud built cross member.  Got to get rid of the factory land anchor.  Any other mod suggestions would be a great help.  thanks mr4x42u for the advice on the Aussie, hardlly even notice it on the road.

Well as for tires I m running 36's and will never go smaller   :headshake: wish I would have went bigger  :yupyup: and I would do a marlin crawler next. It is so nice not ever having to use the clutch to feather over stuff and starting it in gear is kinda cool
